Myrka... I also found this interesting from your post. I didn't realize that these pumping stations were designed to move oil so slowly. The average human walks about 3 miles an hour. 100 hours would average about 300 miles. It seems to me, that if pumping stations weren't eliminated, they could at least be placed farther apart from each other... Like 200 or 250 miles apart instead of 50 or 60. Would the power consumption savings on less pump stations be relevant here?
I'm not forgetting what you said about Head Loss, just don't know how to factor all of those variables into this part of the equation.

Pump stations (logically located just before the AOT) move the crude oil through the AOT and the pipeline to the next station. The pump stations are designed to increase the pressure in the pipeline in order to maintain flow to keep the liquid petroleum moving at about walking speed.
