Is it fair game to consider the question? It is stupid not to.

GGB — I couldn’t agree more. Questioning the received consensus is vital to navigating the world in a way that is consistent with or at least gets one closer to, the truth.

A key indicator that one is not committed to truth — contempt prior to investigation.

How many times have we heard something (something that impacts a key aspect of our lives) that seems outlandish or crazy or threatening and rejected it out of hand.

Contempt prior to investigation.

If one is honest in evaluating one’s reactions to things, the reliance on things we have never investigated in depth, investigated critically, will jump out in bold relief— reliance on the authority of experts, on trusted sources of information (education, media, government, our profession, our tribe), on conceptual frameworks we have essentially inherited or accepted without thorough examination.

We can’t all be Diogenes and walk around all day hoping to bump into an honest man. However, when the issue is critical, we have a lot of assumptions to jettison and hard work to do if we want to find the best, most truthful path forward.

The above is based on decades of experience. I continue to astound myself at how frequently I rely on received opinion.
