I mean I started shorting the market for the first time in my career in 2018. Yes I'm up only 6% in 2019 vs 13% for the S&P. However I was up about 42% on my short plays in 2018 vs the S&P being down around 8%. If we look at overall returns, as I played many long positions in 2018 that I got killed on, I was still up 8% overall in 2018.
So Re, the short plays I've made overall in 2018 & 2019 have actually put me up more than the overall market(by 9% thus far), despite having gotten killed on the long side all during 2018 !
