These new applications expand beyond the Company’s publicly disclosed silkworm and silk technologies, to include advanced construction systems, methods, and non-native proteins.
break open new markets for recombinant protein products, reaching far beyond silks and apparel
I don't think people realize how significant this news really is. If Kraig Labs has been able to develop ways to produce non-native proteins other than silks, this could be game changing. I know they were working on the Knock Out worms for a while. It looks like they may have succeeded in perfecting the process.
There aren't many protein production platforms to choose from. In the past, your options were mainly yeast, bacteria, or mammalian cells. All of these methods are very expensive and have low yields. The use of mammalian cells is relatively new, but yeast and bacteria have been used for decades to create proteins. This is why I have said in the past that Bolt Threads approach is neither new, nor novel. Human Insulin has been made this way for decades.
If the Silkworm platform is able to create non-native proteins, then silkworms have become the newest addition to this bunch. The only difference is, silkworms can pump out large amounts of protein, and much LARGER proteins then the other methods, with the added benefit of being MUCH cheaper.
There are tons of different industrial proteins being made today, but none of them are very cheap to make. I mentioned Human Insulin above; that market is currently worth $25 billion a year and growing. Imagine a new platform worm that is so much more efficient at producing non-native proteins like insulin? What would that be worth?
