jjff, I spent over 6 months in China as part of my working career. What I saw convinced me of the following:

1. Chinese engineers and other professionals work a lot more hours and harder than most US professionals.

2. Censorship in China is alive and well (just watch CNN and BBC screens go blank the moment they start coverage of something the government does not want you to see!)

3. Because of language difficulties, I could not figure out if there was much disagreement with the boss.

4. I did reach an opinion that the average professional in China is more of a follower and less of an entrepreneur compared to the San Francisco bay area.

Chinese GDP numbers are misleading. I have been to India many times and the differences between the Chinese lower classes and the Indian lower classes are minor. Chinese infrastructure is better (it is easy to build roads when eminent domain is AUTOMATIC!), but overall quality of life is comparable.
