That is true. But please remember that those numbers apply to the water coming out of the EC/WTU. The tank turnover time is approximately every ten hours.

The cleaned water is being returned to the tank where it mixes with the water, bacteria, viruses already in the tank. The point being that the bacteria and virus levels in the tank are not as low as they are in the water coming out of the EC/WTU. The bacteria in the water are multiplying all the time and the shrimp feces are adding bacteria to the water all the time. With that in mind it is easy to see how bacteria levels can get out of control very quickly. The tank water in nutrient rich compared to the ocean so the bacteria are well fed and can multiply quickly.

This may seem a bit nit picky. I want to make clear that the levels in shrimp tank are not as low as those numbers suggest.

The other side of this is, with the EC/WTU eliminating bacteria and viruses at the level it does and turning the tank volume every ten hours, the resulting bacteria and virus levels in the shrimp tank are quite low compared to any other RAS system.

The EC/WTU also removes particulate matter which helps control the nutrient levels in the water column that feed the bacteria.

What F&T and NS have developed is a pretty amazing system.

"The delightful and ever-novel pleasure of a useless occupation."
