This is a major advantage an incumbent President has and can easily exploit.
Only sort of. Smart incumbents exploit their incumbency by actually doing things. Good things that please people. Being a statesman. But Trumpty is largely fixated on just giving rallies and basking in the adulation he can command of his base.
If that's all he does, it may well not be enough.
What the Dem candidates need to do, I think, is show their stuff over the next six or eight months, and then winnow the field BEFORE the primaries start. And once they do, they should winnow it further, so people have a sense of who the candidate will be well in advance of the convention. That would put them on a more even footing with Trumpty.
And if they do that, disappointed supporters of losing candidates will have time to recover, and come round to supporting, and feeling enthusiastic about, the eventual nominee. We don't want to repeat what happened last time, with a lot of Bernie Bros unhappy--very unhappy--about Hillary.
