I think you are underestimating the shorts. They always seem to be ahead of the game for some reason.

On a stock like this the only people who are short are retail investors with not a lot of capital scrabbling for pennies. There's no way to get in and out of this in any sort of size without moving the price substantially.

In other words I doubt that they know anything more than we do, probably less.
