For Pts on expensive Hep C drugs or Rx CBD oil their physician is required to send the Rx directly to the manufacturer or a single “specialty pharmacy “ (could be a wholly owned subsidiary of BP) who’s only function is to supply that 1 drug. This specialty pharmacy contacts the pt and does the drug councilling and arranges shipment. They later follow up and monitor usage and arrange refills.
The main motivation for setting up these direct sales was to maximize profit on expense specialty drugs by cutting out the middle man (pharmacy markups, wholesaler’s markup). With V Amazon (for example) would have the added benefit of forcing people to make their first Amazon purchase, a critical event to get new customers comfortable with a new way to shop (think 80 year old unfamiliar with technology or buying online) .
I don’t see Amazon buying Amarin but the business model has been done successfully
