my 2 cents but patent applications are public even if pending, so if you like a company/drug/etc. I don't think that should hold up investing in the company even if that patent has not been granted yet e.g. Sovaldi's patent was not granted until well after the IPO. Their "lead" drug was licensed to Roche but the company was really centered on sovaldi from the get go and we all know how that investment turned out
