Proton pump is simply a membrane spanning protein that moves protons into the cell. Since the area of higher proton concentration is inside the cell, the proton is flowing from a low concentration (outisde the cell) to a high concentration (inside the cell. This against the gradient transfer does require energy but the benefits of having the proton inside the cell are much greater.

There are many different interactions that occur to achieve this "pump" effect.
