Hitting for the cycle [a single, double, triple, home run all in the same game] is pretty rare. Most ballplayers play their entire careers without ever hitting for the cycle. Brock Holt of the Red Sox has done it twice, once last year against the NY Yankees. Holt is 31 years old.

The toughest part of the cycle is the triple. Singles and doubles aren't that tough. Home runs are not as easy, but they happen. But the triple, that's a toughie and kinda hard. It takes a well hit ball and a runner with some speed on the basepaths.

Yesterday in an exhibition spring training game Holt doubled his first time up, a nice shot into the right field corner. On his third time at bat he hit another shot to deep right and took off. A quick look as he was nearing second told him to kick in the afterburner and head for third. A good throw nailed him by a whisker as he slid into third. He wanted that triple and wanted the cycle. He smiled as he got up, his teammates knew what he was trying. Holt is an outstanding player; he can play every position, and he has, and play them well. There aren't too many players I'd pay to see, but Brock Holt is one.
