I seem to have fixed the problem, albeit the long way around. I had to restore a backed-up version of my profile folder (from 2 days ago) and place that in the appropriate folder.

so obviously, some file got corrupted with their update. Especially frustrating because they don't ask you if you want to update to the new Firefox version now, it just does it on the next browser start up.

now I have to move the most recent bookmarks file over (for the new bookmarks from the last 2 days)

EDIT: success! just had to move the places.sqlite file (which is all the Firefox bookmarks) to the new profile folder.
