I started investing back in the mid 1980s, and even though stocks were booming, I was timid and put the first few years of IRA money into fixed income. Rates were really high back then, and I remember getting one preferred stock (utility) that had a 13.5% coupon. A few years before there were treasuries paying 15%.

I had a full service broker, and soon began to venture into stocks. One of the first was a relatively unknown biotech called Amgen. I got 100 shares at 14 and it quickly went to 18 so I gleefully took the profit. Little did I know it would go on to become the behemoth it became. So missed the boat on that one.
