He said something, au contraire, in alluding to 'data at rest'. For those of us who are not jaded, here is the import of what he said: The concept of data at rest is a facet of computer security that has come into general recognition recently, because of the problems such as the plethera of stolen laptops, computers pilfered from offices, etc. It is a problem that is not difficult for the I.T. professional, the non-technical executive, and the member of the public at large to understand. Four or five years ago, we joked about whther trusted computing was a solution looking for a problem, because o the apparent indifference o the computer industry and the computer consumer. Now, SKS can point to the problem of protecting 'data at rest', and the formerly indifferent world can immediately understand the benefit of the kind of secure data paradigm he is talking about. A friend who was then the marketing V.P. at Hewlett-Packard described to me the challenge of his job. It was that the culture of HP was so engineer-dominated, that no-one there knew how to speak 'marketing'-speak, meaning that all of HP's marketing communication tended to consist of engineers speaking to other engineers in specifications, schematic concepts, quantifiable facts, etc., and not in terms of PRODUCT BENEFITS, product utility, and the like. The fact that SKS can, and does crystalize one of the benefits (the security of 'data at rest', for example) of trusted computing in discussing Wave with a largely non-technical investment audience is something that I recognize as 'saying something'... something that should be said over and over until the whole world understands the message.
