I think the only way to "retire" 300-400 million shares is to reverse split. Unless I'm misunderstanding, or missing something. I don't think you can just do away with shares that someone owns. Maybe a buy back?

I'm not an expert, but I think I'd be pretty upset to find that my shares were just arbitrarily retired.

A reverse split is entirely possible. And may be a reality if this goes too much lower. Could be announced tomorrow for all we know.

I believe the number of OS is so high because these companies keep buying assets with shares. Almost like printing their own form of money. At the expense of current share holders, of course. But those decisions would generally be made by board members, and shareholders to some degree. I'm sort of under the impression that the board is supposed to look out for the company and the share holders. I would think many of them have holdings, and I'm sure they want to make money too. That would be the motivation to "do the right thing" and everyone can profit. Be ware of insider trading.

Or, do I have this wrong?
