Perhaps the product being produced is the trial itself. The funding for such trials often involves outside sources such as Universities etc. With taxpayer/shareholder/VC backing. I don't know how it would work fiscally, but I wonder if it can. It must.

Perhaps the War on Cancer has become like modern warfare, which isn't really war with victory in mind, but is a vehicle for the production of goods and services at inflated prices using cost plus fixed free contracts etc, where the accounting is fogged up to the point that the real profit is hidden in the cost structure.

So, both types of wars become necessarily expensive, complex and convoluted, generating income, costs and activity which keeps the machinery going, the Devil being buried in the accounting details.

And eventually, the War itself becomes the raison de'tre. War becomes good. Victory becomes bad for business.


Man, I can be cynical at times.
