This Senator Sold Alibaba, Amazon, Delta, and Visa Stock
By: Barron's | January 18, 2019

A pilot with more than 11,000 flight hours, James Inhofe lightened his load of stocks in the first transactions of the year for the Oklahoma Republican senator.

Inhofe disclosed in a regulatory filing that earlier this week, he sold Alibaba Group Holding (ticker: BABA), Amazon.com (AMZN), Visa (V), CarMax (KMX), and Delta Air Lines (DAL).

On Tuesday, the senator sold $50,001 to $100,000 of Visa stock, and $100,001 to $250,000 of Amazon stock. Disclosure forms don’t require specific values, only ranges.

Stock in both the card company and the retailing giant achieved double-digit gains last year. We noted earlier this month that JPMorgan expects Amazon stock to rally this year.

Inhofe on Wednesday sold $15,001 to $50,000 of Alibaba American depositary receipts, $100,001 to $250,000 of CarMax stock, and $50,001 to $100,000 of Delta stock.

Alibaba, the Chinese internet giant, slumped last year, but Barron’s noted that at least one analyst sees the ADRs surging in 2019. The used-car retailer CarMax also stalled out in 2018, but a rebound could be in the offing. We noted this week that Delta is taking lumps in the continuing partial government shutdown.

“All of Senator Inhofe’s financial transactions are handled by a third-party advisor,” his Senate office said in response to a request for comment. “The senator has had no involvement in and is not consulted about his stock transactions, and files the appropriate disclosure paperwork in accordance with the law.”
