They think they know what they know



Reminds me of a quote from the beginning of The Big Short:
“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

It’s been my experience that this is one of the biggest issues in dealing with cancer, whether as a researcher, doctor or patient.

Apparently Mark Twain never said the above quote, though it certainly sounds like something he would say. The inspiration for the fake quote is Tolstoy, who did write this:

“The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of a doubt, what is laid before him.”

Not trying to slam anyone here. It’s a good reminder to us to not be blinded by our paradigms, especially in such a highly contested realm as cancer.
