This is correct. If China hadn't made the decision to give up exploration and focus inwards and start to spend their wealth building the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, we'd probably all be speaking Mandarin by now.

I am trying to think of any other example of a country that went from besting it's major enemies and clearly becoming the world power, to building a border wall.

Glad the Brits kept up the good work so I can fairly well travel the world speaking English.
