Don't take this the wrong way, but ...

I have decades of experience writing computer code of all sorts; including Assembly Code, which is the fastest code possible.

Human nature: When all else fails, blame the unknown -- blame the machines; blame the gods.

It is NOT automated computer trading that directs the market. It is the decisions of fickle, emotional, fearful humans that causes these fast downward price swings. Fear is always much quicker to respond than is greed.

That is why large, fast market downswings are far more common than similar upswings -- fear always acts much faster than greed.
