Not only is it a good thing for Tesla financially to be able to pay it off in stock, I think the shareholders will benefit. Even though it will dilute the shares, it will show Tesla flexing its grasp on the auto world and make the stock worth even more than the amount payed for by the convertible bond holders. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla finds a way to both pay debt off with stocks at the same time attracting new deals and investors. Time will tell.
