It’s not the reverse split that is the issue. It’s what follows. When the company will inevitably issue more shares either by another financing deal or buying a useless company like a marketing firm. So shareholders with post split shares are then water down more.

Using your example the parents cut the pie into 4 slices, gave the kids two and the parents kept 2 and then the parents ordered another pie for themselves.
