Rosie - I have thought of moving into a 'no-tax' state when I re-retire - as it would add hundreds per month to my retirement - but there isn't any state that really has a pull factor for me at this time. Besides - I would need to study the different states. Where they may not have an income tax - they may have 'workarounds' like very high property tax, personal property tax, etc to help them make up the difference.

Oregon is a nasty state for taxes. Right next to California. I feel for your kid having to pay the exorbitant amount he does.

A number of months ago, some states were talking of creative ways to get around the impact of the loss state income tax deduction on the federal return but I haven't heard much lately.

My understanding is that the feds disallowed the prepayment of future year property taxes as a deduction for last year taxes...although i am not certain since I opted not to go that route.

I wanted to add that I have seen some posts talking about the LTCG rate as being 15%. Well that is only up to a certain income limit and then rises to 20% past that limit. The thing is, the capital gain in included in calculated that threshold income limit.

You are correct about it moving up to 20% at a certain point of actual income earned for the year. The link to the capital gains website providing the amounts has been put up several times. Unfortunately the link doesn't really lay out the 3.8% NIIT surprise that many Amaranians will get when they start selling their shares. I wanted people to be aware of the 3.8% tax in case each Amaranian wanted to come up with a different schedule on how they will divest their shares when the time comes.... That's why it is so important people consult with a tax person before they start selling because there are no 'do overs'.
