I don't think this NUGT/GDX gap is a breakaway any more than the last one was in Oct.
There was no major external event with staying power that precipitated the move.

Current trading is about pulling out what can be gained and perfection is unattainable.
The norm is for the bots to make it look like something and pull the rug.
If that changes it will take more confirmation than intraday or the few days of up that recently occurred.
No matter what today looks like price is still in a trading below the trading range of the last 20months.

Scalping is my mantra until it isn't.
Just my 2cents.
