A good friend of mine is a big believer in having a well designed core portfolio of investments. He acknowledges that core portfolios are kind of boring, however. So, he is also an advocate of having a "sandbox" in which to play if one can afford it.
I have a portfolio of 10 individual company stocks that is my "sandbox." It is where I go to pretend I'm a great stock picker and portfolio manager. It doesn't represent a big percentage of my overall investments and is somewhat limited in diversification because of that. If it were larger, maybe I'd consider 15 or 20 stocks, but that's a lot more work.
My sandbox portfolio is managed by (guess what) AIM as are my core portfolios and I chose to do so in a retirement account to keep taxable capital gains sheltered for a while yet. It's a relatively recent portfolio started in March of 2014. I carved off a portion of another IRA (Ultimate Buy and AIM portfolio) to start it. After some growing pains it's settled into some reasonable activity and is growing in value. It is currently showing a gain through the end of October of 3.3% Year-To-Date and 6.3% Year-over-Year.
It's current construction is a mix of growth and dividend stocks. I've been using Value Line's "Selection and Opinion" section with their Portfolios II and III as happy hunting grounds for this effort. I restarted a discussion on it here on I-Hub a while ago, but need to get it updated. https://investorshub.advfn.com/AIM-Value-Line-Stocks-aim_VL-1010/
