"Dr. B did not benefit from that sale except that he now holds shares with a basis of .40 that are worth .18"

That was the issue I was examining. If Dr B returned shares that were valued at higher amounts than they should have been (based on the fact that the share price at the time of their return was less than the credited share price) it would have resulted in larger credits than he was entitled to.
