News! POT PRIMER: Cannabis shop operators ready for great unknown

One of Winnipeg’s first cannabis shops is ready for the unknown come Oct. 17.

Delta 9 will have its first shop in Winnipeg open at 827 Dakota Street in St. Vital bright and early on Wednesday, one of two shops set to open across the city, and they’re prepared for multiple scenarios.

“We’ve heard there will be lines, we’ve heard that people are going to be camping out overnight so they can be one of the first to purchase legal cannabis,” said Delta 9 communications rep Gary Symons.

“We don’t know,” said Delta 9 president and CEO John Arbuthnot. “We’re preparing for the busiest.”

Arbuthnot said there’s so much doing on leading up to Oct. 17, he hasn’t had time to catch up with the excitement.

“We’re going go in and open up that store on that morning and it’s going to be almost surreal that all this work has gone in for that moment,” Arbuthnot said. “We want to feel the excitement, we want to capitalize on that whenever we can, but we want to look long term as well. This is an evolution for our country.”

Is Delta 9 ready to meet the potential demand?

“I liken it anything from very important sports game to an exam or anything in between,” Arbuthnot said. “You’re excited, you feel ready, but you never feel as ready as you could be if you had another day or another week. You’re ready to jump in head first and see what comes of it.”

Delta 9’s store in St. Vital checked off all the boxes they want when they’re looking for a location to set up shop. It’s near a mall, it’s near where a lot of traffic is, it’s near where you’d stop and get groceries.

“We want them to be on the drive home,” Arbuthnot said. “We want these stores to be somewhere where you can stop and get your groceries, you stop at the liquor store and you can stop and get your cannabis.

“Dakota ranked very high for us.”

Construction continues on one of the new Delta 9 Cannabis Store locations in Winnipeg. Cannabis becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17.

Delta 9 says its stores aren’t going to be what you might association a pot shop to be. There won’t be Bob Marley posters on the wall or grungy components. Instead, customers will be met with a well-lit, bright atmosphere that’s professional.

“It’s probably closer to an Apple Store than what you’d think of as a dispensary,” Symons said. “It’s a pretty bright place with a lot of education elements. It’s about bringing cannabis out of the stigma. For us, that means creating it the most pleasurable shopping environment experience for the consumer.:

Symons said their employees will be well-versed in cannabis to help both medical clientele and clientele who are new to cannabis.

Delta 9 said selection in the first six weeks will likely be limited in the number of strains offered. They’ve elected to make sure volume is high instead of spreading it thing among a number of strains. But that said, there will be plenty of offerings.
