Recession is a bad word for any economy, But that doesn’t mean that business don’t do well in a recession.

Many don’t obviously, but some do. In fact, some businesses thrive in such an economy. There is an article which states 50 ideas that work in a depression. I’m going to quote the ones that could work for us:

1 Food and beverages
Food business is a very lucrative because no matter the economic situation; people must eat. But I am not talking about pooling your hard earned money and starting a restaurant business; although if that seems like a feasible thing to do, it just might work.
However, going into the restaurant business still has its risk and a very high one at that. Instead, you might consider going into a food and beverage business by focusing on offering healthier stuffs. These days, going into a recession is even a better excuse to eat healthy because it encourages people to cut down on their consumption and to avoid unnecessary purchases.”

“14 Beer, wine and liquor
Americans tend to cut back on the pricier drinking options during a recession but that doesn’t mean that people quit drinking. Restaurant sales of wine by the bottle fell sharply in 2009 and so did bar revenues but wholesalers of beer, wine and liquor did just fine during the last recession. Restaurant sales of wine by the glass went up”

“35 Coffee Shop Business
To start a successful coffee shop business, it is advisable that you develop a business plan that can help you run the business effectively. If you also have the intention to seek external funding or grow bigger, then you definitely need a business plan.
Include also your market strategy and key factors that you believe will make your coffee shop unique and differentiate from every other coffee shop in the area. Though it sounds easier than it is but like in any other business, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This is where a coffee shop marketing plan comes into play.”

Snakes&Lattes is an excellent model. It serves food, liquor, entertainment and retail, all at the same place. If anything, if a depression does happen and I pray to God it does not, but if it does happen, entrepreneurs are likely to flock to our doors and open their own business.
