Yes, I agree. The more diversified the portfolio, the more likely it is to just trend-follow the rest of the market. That makes out-performance a very difficult task.

For the few individual company stocks that I own, I'm generally content to collect dividends and manage whatever market risk comes along using AIM. Being an opportunistic method, it rarely makes bad decisions about management. Therefore investment selection becomes a more important aspect. Here's a haiku from 2011:
