at some point when ur broker begins processing the cusip/name change, they (might) not allow trading (of the old symbol). instead, some will allow you to sell the new ticker, which, because you don't actually "own", is a short. they allow you to sell because they know that the old stock, which you do currently own, will be changing over. and, once that change is complete, they settle your "short" of the new ticker out of the shares that have now been changed to the new ticker. makes sense, or did i confuse u more?
