Samsung tried it. Nokia tried it. They found there was no demand because consumers "voted" they didn't want to be inconvenienced by the lifestyle changes needed to keep the phone charged.
The last phone maker to try it was the Japanese company Kycoera. They did better than both Samsung and Nokia regarding efficiency. But still, the best they could do was 3 to 1 charge to usage time. 45 minutes charging in the sun for 15 minutes of usage. 24 hours of sun to 8 hours of use.
In 2016, they were planning on bringing their solar charging phone to market and planned to demonstrate/exhibit it at various electronic shows globally.
After test marketing, they abandoned the whole idea as once again, consumers said >> Nah, too inconvenient to charge it...will simply plug our charger in the wall.
So, even though it can be done, consumers have been saying "Don't waste your time and money. We're not going to use it."
Having said that, if the target market is areas of the world where a consumer can rely on sunny days year round, well maybe it would be feasible for a company to try to market it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
24 hours of full sun and only 8 hours of use from that charge...not exactly causing a stampede of consumers who want one. But, I guess we'll see.
