These long drawn out consolidation phases are great for a stock's overall health because the long droughts with very little volume shake out the last of the last of the weak hands - who get frustrated with the lack of action and bail. The lack of liquidity means they need to sell at a discount to get out in an expedited fashion which then means that those shares leave weak hands and enter in stronger hands who got a great deal on them.

All that's to say that these shake outs make a tight float that much tighter.
