Algae grow much, much faster if you add a couple ingredients to the basics of water, CO2, and sunshine - the Chesapeake Bay has suffered from massive algae blooms in the past that created oxygen dead zones that made large regions uninhabitable for fish and crabs - all caused by storm run-off full of fertilizers and various manures. Raising chickens is a huge bizness on the Eastern Shore of MD, and disposing of the chicken litter is a serious problem - it's chock full of nitrogen and phosphorus, and when it's like energy food for algae, which blooms massively when fed that stuff. So farming algae "downy shore" could be a double winner for chicken farmers and the Bay - they pay millions per year to dispose of the crap.
