I have had 4 computers since 1979. The last was an iMac 2 yrs ago. I used it for a while and ended up giving it to my daughter for her and her 3 teenagers to use. In the beginning I was all into computers especially when I got my first Mac in 1984 and got into spreadsheets, desktop publishing and all the neat new things that were being pioneered wth a GUI.
By then we started getting PC's at work and what was once a fun hobby turned into drudgery. Eight hours at work using a PC and then use one at home. After about 3 years with the Mac it became a paperweight except the 2-3 times a month when I wrote a letter to someone somewhere.
WebTV came along just about the time I was thinking about getting in on the Internet craze (1996). WebTV gives me about 99% of what I want to use the Internet for and my monitor is a 27" TV. The WebTV unit plugs into the S-Video and Stereo ports and my VCR can record screen shots, animations etc from the web if I want. There are also printers and scanners available and my keyboard is IR remote. It sits on my belly while I am reclined in my Lazy Boy chair.
Cheapskate is being frugal when you are involuntarily "retired" via a downsizing. I've been living off of savings and investments and hope to stretch that two more years until I can draw S.S.
