I woke up this morning with a clear realization - this "Alzheimer's epidemic" is a creation of the pharmaceutical industry.

Fact - not fiction.

The practice of psychiatry was originally centered around a Freudian model which, while deeply flawed, centered around cognitive therapy and not drug therapy. In college I learned about behaviorism. But pharmaceuticals have become the go to solution.

In the early '80s I went through a divorce and was treated by a well respected psychiatrist for several months. There were no drugs prescribed, we simply talked. She encouraged me as I grieved the death of the marriage and went on to make my own way. That's all she did, no drugs. After a few months she congratulated me on my progress and said I didn't need her anymore.

In 1996 I contracted coccidioidomycosis while at a trade show in Arizona. I developed serious breathing problems and had one episode of anaphylactic shock and a near death experience. I was in the ICU and intubated for a couple of days afterward. The fungal infection that caused this crisis was left untreated and it disseminated throughout my entire right side.

Before that time I only used asthma inhalers sporadically and had never been hospitalized for breathing problems. During the next five years I was hospitalized for asthma frequently and had pain and other symptoms of disseminated fungal infection. I now have internal scarring on my lungs and liver that show up in an MRI.

While going through all of this I was told it was "menopause", "depression", and given drugs to treat these conditions. The fungal infection was not treated despite the fact that I informed the doctors that I had contracted it. They symptoms began immediately upon exposure and while at another trade show a few months later I learned that others who attended were diagnosed with "Valley Fever" and I reported this to my doctors.

SSRI's were prescribed repeatedly by and endocrinologist and general practitioners, I refused to take all of them because I got creepy dreams and felt worse when I was taking them.

After years of inadequate or damaging medical care I lost my business and two homes that I had substantial equity in. I had a complete breakdown which was actually not surprising since I was still in a state of chronic hypoxia and dealing with considerable life stress. I was sent to a psychiatrist after two weeks of inpatient treatment. He prescribed one SSRI after another despite the fact that I told him I could not tolerate them previously. After the third or fourth attempt I asked him "Are you willing to do anything for me other that prescribe SSRIs?"

He said "No".

I said "This is our last appointment."

I learned about serotonin syndrome on this board. I think it was probably Dadofmarkmax that PM'd me. I finally had a name for what I experienced. I often wonder how many people experience the feeling of creeping insanity that serotonin syndrome creates, is this why suicide is listed as a possible side effect? Why won't psychiatrists listen? Why do GP's and Endo's freely prescribe SSRI's when they are so dangerous?

My generation is the first to be heavily exposed to benzodiazepines, SSRI's and SNRI's in adulthood. Then there are the statins, the ppi's and probably a few other classes of drugs that are prescribed without enough attention being paid to their side effects. Our minds and bodies have been damaged by the pharmaceutical industry.

The saddest part of all of this is now we have begun medicating our kids with these toxic compounds in the same careless fashion. It needs to stop. See the reference below.
