A huge amount are pure profit. My commission on a 15 dollar warranty was .23. 23 cents. That means they make 150 every 10 I sell and pay me 2.30.
Whoot.
They deducted costs and minus sales and I would have zero paychecks and then the next one would deduct until made up.

The company was very well known but is long gone now.
They could not keep any salespeople in the store in many departments because of such idiotic commission formulas.
They deducted when someone brought back a perfectly working item, and then would put it back on the shelf as refurbished without doing any checking. They had us plug stuff in and if it turned on that was good enough.

I would put most of this mistreatment on department bosses who were company mascots. Their upper management would look the other way because we were so expendable. Department stores today aren't that bad but I don't even know a store that has commission any more. Maybe big appliance still does.
