The problem I have with this is not the research, but the proposed solution:

Preventative antimicrobial drugs or vaccines that can stop these germs from ever reaching the brain in the first place. Some recent, if observational research (meaning, not controlled trials) has already suggested that these drugs can lower the risk of dementia.

Why not simple immune system support and banning all drugs and procedures that cause compromised immune systems?

What are these "preventative antimicrobial drugs"?

So I looked up famciclovir and got this:

What are the side effects of famciclovir?
The most common side effects associated with the use of famciclovir are:

headache,
fatigue,
nausea,
vomiting,
rash,
diarrhea, and
flatulence.
Other important side effects which are serious, but rare, include

serious allergic reactions,
serious skin reactions,
jaundice,
abnormal tests of liver function, and
reduced white blood cells (neutropenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
Cases of kidney failure have been reported when higher than recommended doses of famciclovir were administered to patients with underlying kidney problems.

The side effects indicate that the immune system is being messed with, not supported. It's the good ol' Big Pharma feedback loop. $$$$$$$
