I've worked with Alan Mendelson at Latham on several transactions, and I bleeve your friend was on an acquisition back around 15+ years back that Alan was a lead on. IIRC your friend was an associate on Alan's team - I'm horrible with names butt his is somewhat memorable. I'm pretty shure his name was on the deal contact sheet and I bleeve I met him one time in the beginning of the transaction (it was an acquisition of a Bay Area biopharma for (and I'm going to blur the amount, even though I know the exact valuation, so that it will be difficult to identify) the range of 1.3-2.1 billion - by a midsize biopharma (market cap at the time in the range of 12-17 billion).

Your friend was nott involved in the IP area, so as I said I think I only met him once at an initial meeting for that transaction. I do have recollection of his unusual name - and I think it was on the contact sheet of all the members of all teams involved in the transaction and their contact info and emergency contact info. This was in the pre-smartphone daze, so Blackberries were the thing - and woe be unto s/he who is nott Czeching email at least every 2 hours even at night. If you cannot be contacted on an urgent matter (and many are), that is ... uhh ... poor form. LOL! If your phone rings at 3AM, answer it.

BTW, funny if you went to Haas - I've given lectures there on IP for their entrepreneurship and a biotech class. Also at Stanford - in an entrepreneurship course that was joint with the medical school and the business school - very interesting mix of students. I was an invited lecturer and also a 'coach' and a judge on the individual business plans & pitches formulated by breakout teams of the students. That was fun! Unfortunately, the person who was the organizer of that course passed away from a nasty cancer several years back - she was young and a M.D., M.B.A. - and had two beautiful young boys just a bit younger than my son. It was just tragic watching her go downhill - she knew exactly what was in store for her and the last time I saw her we had coffee (which I don't normally drink much of anymore - mostly a tea guy) at University Coffee in PA and all of her verve was gone. She used to be someone who was characterized by the phrase "her hair's on fire" (high-energy person and always positive) and it was so sad to see her when those embers had died ~OUTT.

I cannot recommend any sushi/Japanese place in the area that will match or top Nobu - other than ... NOBU. In case you din't know, there is a Nobu in downtown PA now. I've eaten at Matsuhisa (Nobu) in Beverly Hills (their black cod was exquisite butt it seems to nott be available anymore), butt nott in Malibu. Other than the Nobu in downtown PA, there is mid/low grade sushi/sashimi at Fuki Sushi (nott recommended, butt edible - and cheap - prolly nott your style) on El Camino. We used to have a cool place - right across from City Hall and the cop shop - called Le Poisson Japonais. It was a fusion of sushi/sashimi/Japanese and French saucier and presentation (the co-owner was a sushi/Japanese chef and also had trained in classical French cuisine) - and it was both unusual and pretty damned good. The way to play it was the tasting menu - you'd gett 11 items (IIRC) in sequence and he varied the items so you always gott at least 2-3 things new to you. I don't recall why it closed. Too bad, you would have liked that place.
