my posting was meant to be a humorous conversation starter. When first discovered that castoreum was used in food stuffs it took off as a kind of an overblown urban myth as those things are wont to do.
One of the first things that occurred to me was how incredibly hard and tedious a task that must be for what surely is a limited outcome.
The facts appear to be that it did at one time appear to make it into food stuffs and may still continue, but there is a limited production of 292 lb.s of castoreum produced by beavers a year. Not enough to go far enough around that anyone should be alarmed, but a great conversation starter for those that like to torment the more squeamish of our acquaintances. Like my brother who is an absolute vanilla ice cream freak as well an amateur hypochondriac who coincidentally made it first on the email list last night after I ran across the HuffPo article.
