if physical shares had to trade hands on every deal online trading and day trading wouldn't exist, market makers profit from the spread and in return agree to buy and sell the market to keep it fairly fluid
MMs do not short these stocks, it's been a myth for a decade now and not one single piece of fact has ever supported that myth. not one pissed off employee, not one ex-executive coming clean on his death bed, not one errant email detailing schemes. all the other MM crimes have been outed like gay republicans, but nothing involving improperly shorting stocks for fun and profit
MMs profit from spreads, holding inventory (short or long) increases their risk, they aim to avoid it.
