Dow Chemical is listed next to XNRGI as a sponsor at the battery conference...interesting links to Tekion and Dow researcher Bob Morgan..

Leading companies of a Organic Acid market that has gained an appreciable share in a market (covered company profiles and Organic Acid business performance based on sales revenue, product cost and gross margin) include Dow Chemical, ADM, Tate & Lyle, Eastman, Cargill, Myriant Corporation, Calanese Corporation, DuPont, BASF and Henan Jindan Lactic Acid Technology.

Analysis based on the type of product to explore the scope of the global Organic Acid market includes Acetic Acid, Formic Acid, Propionic Acid and Citric Acid.

The fundamental difference between a fuel cell and a battery is that a fuel cell is an energy generation device whereas a battery is an energy storage device. A battery discharges over a period of time until it needs to be recharged. Rapid recharging of a battery often causes serious complications and as a result recharging a battery is a prolonged process. By contrast a fuel cell generates electricity immediately in the presence of its reactants. Once the formic acid replenished, the Neah Power Systems Forima fuel cell generates electricity instantly. As a result there is no protracted recharging or refueling time issue.

Abstract
The objective of this talk is to describe a 1mm^2 hybrid hydrogen / self-breathing cathode fuel cell that produces a higher power output than other previously reported miniature hydrogen fuel cells. As background, MEMS based fuel cells have been proposed to replace batteries in distributed sensor networks, on chip power, and implantable devices. As of yet, MEMS based fuel cells give performance no better than miniature batteries [1-9]. Prior to our work, the best MEMS based hydrogen/air fuel cell only produced 70 mW/cm2 compared to 149 mW/cm2 in our device. Yu et al[2] showed 195 mW/cm2 by running pure oxygen on the cathode, but note that powers are 4-5 times higher with oxygen than with air. Our device shows the highest power output of those shown previously.

Aug 2006 – May 2011 Employment Duration
4 yrs 10 mos
I worked on teams to develop miniature Formic Acid and Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Fuel cells were fabricated via both micro fabrication techniques as well as small scale fuel cell hardware. Carried out anode catalyst modification via both adatoms and conductive polymers. Electrochemical characterization of modified catalyst layers were tested both in an electrochemical cell and fuel cell environment. Examined catalyst layers by SEM, TEM, XPS. Also fabricated stable Pd on CNT catalysts for Formic acid fuel cell anodes. Carried out electrochemical testing both in and out of a fuel cell. Also characterized via SEM, TEM , XPS and XRD.
