Re: The Jefferies' doctors comments...

One thing really going for Amarin longs is the level of ignorance in the medical community including cardiologists when it comes to omega-3s, JELIS and R-I...The ignorance is close to absolute..

From the Jefferies' report: "One cited skepticism that clinicians can draw many strong conclusions from the JELIS study (e.g., open-label, nonWestern population, was a primary prevention study, different dose of EPA, higher consumption of fish in Japanese diet vs. western populations)."

This comment pretty much sums up mainstream cardiology's view on JELIS...But how accurate are these comments?

Ans: Not accurate at all...JELIS was not "open label"...It was not "double blinded"...it was "single blinded"...big difference. True the Japanese study did use Japanese patients...but there is very compelling evidence that as far as EPA is concerned...it is processed the same in westerners as in Japanese...and actually studying Japanese living in the USA, eating western diet if anything
Japanese may run higher CVD rates when their EPA levels fall.

..As far as EPA doses the idea in R-I is to try to duplicate EPA/AA ratio as close as possible in the JELIS trial...So blood levels in the active arm should match the JELIS active arm...

As far as HDL levels are concerned..elevated trig levels are better surrogates for CVD risk. HDL has been "downgraded.

JELIS was not a "primary prevention study"...It was a "mixed" trial where roughly 14,400 enrollees were primary and 3,600 enrollees were secondary..The secondary group was a little too small to get strong statistical support...But in every meaningful endpoint except one showed a consistent reduction of risk of about 20%...Which if I was betting a guy flipping coins and the coin came up heads ten times in a row...I'd want to take a close look at the coin...

None of what I'm saying is controversial, or untrue...These doctors just do not know what they are talking about or are repeating things they heard said by doctors who did not know what they are talking about...

Truth...JELIS is very predictive....
