We were told to email IR directly as he would be too busy to respond to all of us and it was getting overwhelming for him, etc. I understand that on his end no matter how you feel about the company.

Hence him responding to someone directly in such a quick turnaround raises suspicion. It also uses words that I had not seen IR use before in their responses.
