I find it interesting that the article stated that the Broadcom and Qualcom deal was rejected, in part, due to security concerns related to China while also mentioning that the US government also used AT&T for its own purposes. None of which is anything new or surprising. So both countries are concerned about security when it comes to using the other country's computer chips and hardware. It makes sense from the Chinese perspective for them to back Huawei strenuously. The article also displays figures on money being spent on research and developement. Huawei is clearly spending more than Qualcom if the figures are correct. It was feared that a Broadcom Qualcom merger would result in less R&D spending. There may be a role for government to play in a free entrrprise economy to encourage investment in critical industries.
