I just did that with an oldie with a broken hinge..to get the SSD, which I then put in a new to me laptop after cloning the o/s and files from the existing HD, using an external open enclosure, which works great for transferring anything between HD's or PC's.
Anyhow, the oldie was filthy inside..... it still works, as I replaced the SSD with the HDD I'd taken out a few years ago.
The new one is about a second generation i7, but has discrete graphics, and 16 gb of memory. It only cost me $280 as I bought it on a 15% ebay bucks deal!!! Did the same with a bunch of camera and PC gear and had $219 in ebay bucks to spend in April. Just picked up a 128 gb SD card, a fast one, for $75...and am now down to $82 left in ebay bucks. The new one, a Dell Precision M4600, was clean as a whistle inside!!
