50 Years After My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, Revisiting the Slaughter the U.S. Military Tried to Hide

Fifty years ago, on March 16, 1968, U.S. soldiers attacked the Vietnamese village of My Lai. Even though the soldiers met no resistance, they slaughtered more than 500 Vietnamese women, children and old men over the next four hours, in what became known as the My Lai massacre. After the massacre, the U.S. military attempted to cover up what happened. But in 1969 a young reporter named Seymour Hersh would reveal a 26-year-old soldier named William Calley was being investigated for killing 109 Vietnamese civilians. Today, memorials have been held in My Lai to mark the 50th anniversary of this horrific attack.

President Donald J. Trump Proclaims March 18, 2018, through March 24, 2018, to be National Poison Prevention Week

Poisoning remains the leading cause of injury death in the United States. By taking the proper precautions and preparing for emergency situations, however, we can ensure our families and our communities avoid poisoning tragedies. During National Poison Prevention Week, we strive to reduce the frequency of poisoning deaths and educate ourselves about how to prevent accidental poisoning.
Since 2000, the rate of accidental drug-poisoning deaths has more than quadrupled. Accidental poisoning due to drug overdose has taken immense tolls on families all across the country, and synthetic opioids continue to push the death count higher. In 2016 alone, we lost 116 people per day from opioid-related drug overdoses.
To address this devastating epidemic, I have mobilized my entire Administration to combat drug addiction and opioid abuse. In October 2017, my Administration declared the opioid addiction crisis a national public health emergency. My 2018 Budget proposes $3 billion in new funding this year to combat the opioid epidemic, including through providing additional support for mental health initiatives.
My Administration has also led multiple national “Take Back Day” events, during which Americans have had the opportunity to safely dispose of unneeded prescription medications, preventing them from falling into the wrong hands. During the most recent event last October, the Drug Enforcement Administration collected 456 tons of prescription drugs for disposal at more than 5,300 collection sites. We will continue to champion these initiatives, which help prevent future tragedies from accidental poisonings and drug overdoses.
This week, and every week, we warn all Americans about unintended exposure to poisons, so that we can reduce risks and prevent injuries and lost lives. We all can do our part by ensuring the products we bring into our homes, including medications, cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, small batteries, and other chemicals, are stored out of sight and out of reach of children. Accidental poisonings are preventable, and we must recommit ourselves to taking the necessary actions to protect our families, and improve the health, well-being, and prosperity of our Nation as a whole.
To encourage Americans to learn more about the dangers of unintentional poisonings and to take appropriate preventative measures, on September 26, 1961, the Congress, by joint resolution (75 Stat. 681), authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation designating the third week of March each year as “National Poison Prevention Week.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 18, 2018, through March 24, 2018, to be National Poison Prevention Week. I call upon all Americans to observe this week by taking actions to safeguard their families from poisonous products, chemicals, and medicines, and drugs found in our homes, and to raise awareness of these dangers in order to prevent accidental injuries and deaths.

Across our great Nation, vocational-technical schools prepare Americans for careers in critical sectors of our economy, including manufacturing, construction, and technology fields. These industries are essential to our Nation’s prosperity and security, as well as to our success in the competitive global marketplace. During Vocational-Technical Education Week, we highlight the important role that vocational and technical education plays in lifting up our communities and putting millions of Americans on the road to success.
As I said in the State of the Union Address, my Administration is focused on investing in workforce development, especially as the recent tax cuts spur major job creation across the country. Today, 5.9 million American jobs are unfilled, and more than 350,000 of them are in manufacturing. Our Nation needs skilled workers to fill these roles, but the cost of postsecondary education continues to rise while many colleges and universities fail to adequately equip students with skills that align with the jobs in demand. Businesses large and small routinely observe that they cannot find qualified applicants to fill their vacancies. Vocational-technical schools help students explore their passions and enter the workforce with the necessary competencies to secure well-paying, family-sustaining jobs.
My Administration recognizes the importance of increasing access to education, which is why my infrastructure proposal includes important reforms that will make it easier for Americans to access affordable, relevant, and high-quality education that leads to full-time work and long-term careers. It also includes initiatives related to workforce development. Specifically, my proposal would allow students to use Pell Grant funding to pay for cutting-edge, short-term programs that lead to quick and efficient transitions into the workforce. My proposal also calls on the Congress to reauthorize the Perkins Career and Technical Education program and to improve it by making it easier for schools to partner with local businesses to expand apprenticeships, other forms of skills-based learning, and dual-enrollment programs. Further, I have called for reforming the Federal Work-Study program so that more Federal dollars go toward helping students — especially lower-income students — have more meaningful workplace experiences. Through a combination of administrative and legislative actions, my Administration is seeking to train the workforce of today for both the challenges and developments of tomorrow.
Vocational-Technical Education Week reminds us to consider how we can help all Americans achieve the American Dream, by providing opportunities for all of our citizens to secure employment, success, and fulfillment. American strength and prosperity truly rely upon the educational advancement opportunities we make available to our Nation’s youth.
NOW, THERFORE, I, DONALD J. AI Poker Bots Are Beating The World's Best Players (HBO)

What’s it like to play poker against an AI bot? Really weird and really difficult, it turns out.
That was the vibe when we checked in on the 20-day “Brains vs. AI: Re-Match” in Pittsburgh, which pits four professional poker players against a Carnegie Mellon University-designed bot named Libratus.
Computer scientists at the university had tried this stunt with a bot named Claudico in 2015, but the humans picked up on its weird machine weaknesses and beat it soundly. So the scientists went back to the lab and rewrote its algorithm in a few key areas to make it unbeatable.
Their work paid off.
On Jan. 30, Libratus made history by trouncing the humans in a marathon 120,000 hands, coming out on top by $1,766,250 in chips — and pretty much killing it every day before that. The humans ended their inglorious run by splitting shares of a $200,000 prize.
The bot’s win has numerous implications for any field where decision-making is based on incomplete, or hidden, information. Or straight-up misinformation. Fields where people are forced to think like poker players, basically. Business negotiation, military strategy, cybersecurity, and medical treatment are all areas the bot’s designers say could benefit from the algorithms that govern its automated decision-making.
Get ready, humanity — the bots have entered the building.

ACLU Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson reflects on the importance of fully confronting our nation's history:
The very existence of the concept of Black History Month suggests that, for twenty eight days in February, we should think about Black History, so that we can comfortably forget about it for the next eleven months of the year. But that’s a dangerous and sometimes fatal mistake, because forgetting or ignoring history can cause chaos.
When George Orwell wrote 1984 he made two statements that I think are critical for us to understand where we are today: “who controls the past controls the future,” and “who controls the present controls past.” That’s what is at stake when we think about forgetting our history. What is at stake is our future.
America either has a headache with our racial history, or we’ve got cancer. And the truth about our past reveals that there is a cancer that we have to deal with. If we continue to take aspirin to cure what we would like to believe is a headache, we will not get out of where we are.
Without deviation from the norm we will not progress. All of us need to be bold in our thinking about what it means to have true racial justice in America. Black History Month needs to be replaced with a focus on black history every month – because after all, it is a part of American history.

Trump’s ‘Bowling Ball Test’ for U.S. Cars Is Just A Goofy Ad

President Donald Trump had people scratching their heads when he referred — with obvious annoyance — to an unpassable “bowling ball test” that Japan uses to justify excluding American cars from the market.
Trump insisted to donors in Missouri on Wednesday that a U.S. automaker had spent a “fortune” building a super car to beat Japanese regulatory tests — but was pounded in the “bowling ball test,” according to an audiotape of his talk [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2018/03/15/transcript-of-trumps-remarks-at-fundraiser-in-missouri-on-march-14/ ] obtained by NBC News and The Washington Post.
“It’s horrible the way they treat us. It’s horrible,” the angry president griped.
The test, he said, involves dropping a bowling ball “from 20 feet up in the air” onto the hood of a car. “If the hood dents, then the car doesn’t qualify,” he said. “Well, guess what, the roof dented a little bit, and they said, nope, this car doesn’t qualify.”
There is no such regulatory test. The best guess on what Trump was talking about?
The Post speculated it was likely linked to a goofy Nissan ad showing bowling balls bouncing wildly down a street. The balls smash several parked cars. Only a Nissan cruises by unscathed ... “urban proof.”
When a smiling reporter who covered the Japanese auto industry for 25 years told White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that no one has any idea what the president was talking about, she said Trump clearly was “joking.”
“Obviously, he’s joking about this particular test,” Sanders said. Trump’s reference “illustrates the creative ways” countries keep American goods out of their markets, she said.
The donor talk in Missouri was the same place where Trump boasted that he dressed down Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for having a trade surplus with the U.S. (The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative actually reports a trade deficit with America).
“I didn’t even know,” Trump told his audience. “I had no idea.”

Vote — or else: Crimea’s propaganda machine fans fear in closing days of Putin’s campaign
SIMFEROPOL, Crimea — On the eve of Russia’s presidential election, government television here has been airing segments showing Crimeans what they would face if not for Russian President Vladimir Putin: rocket fire, grieving women and same-sex weddings.
On a political show, the host warns that the West will use any sign of Russian weakness due to low turnout to carry out plans to exterminate the Russian people.
“Our role is a military one,” says Yekaterina Kozyr, the head of this annexed territory’s fast-expanding government broadcaster. “There is a war going on.”
In 2014, as Putin’s capture of this Black Sea peninsula unfolded, Russian troops wearing uniforms without identifying markings seized the dilapidated Crimean headquarters of the Ukrainian state television broadcaster. Four years later, the building gleams, freshly sheathed in gray metal siding. Inside the new modern studios, a staff more than double the Ukraine-era size is fanning fears of annihilation to boost Putin ahead of Sunday’s vote.
For all the buzz about Kremlin efforts to influence the Internet, control of the television airwaves remains central to Putin’s power. Nowhere is this clearer than in Crimea, where a propaganda machine that Russia spent millions of dollars to build over the past four years is now fully deployed to drum up votes.
Even though Putin is assured of a blowout victory, analysts say, the Kremlin is seeking turnout as a stamp of legitimacy for his fourth six-year presidential term. In Crimea, a place central to Putin’s domestic image as a fearless protector of Russian interests, officials see turnout as especially symbolic. They are determined to see it exceed the turnout in Crimea’s internationally unrecognized referendum to join Russia in 2014, which pro-Russian authorities put at more than 80 percent.
“Crimeans understand that we must contribute no fewer people in the election than we did in the referendum in 2014,” said Grigory Ioffe, chairman of the territory’s Civic Chamber. “Public opinion in the West will be counting this.”
For Crimea’s state media, that means war — war against Western “spies” who they claim would like to use an underwhelming Putin election victory to foment unrest. Kozyr describes her staff, who were trained by state media specialists from Moscow, as “informational special forces.” Dmitry Taran, host of a show called “Information Warfare,” says he is both “an information specialist and a military man.”
“It’s necessary to create maximum turnout,” Taran said in an interview. “Vote for whoever you want but turn out — in order to shut up all the international intelligence services that are sitting and waiting for the 19th,” he said, referring to the day after the election.
The message on Crimean television is, if anything, darker and more conspiratorial than the regular fare on Russia’s national TV. That may be because daily life in Crimea is harder than in mainland Russia. International sanctions mean that even Russian companies are wary of doing business here, and the lack of a road connection to the rest of Russia leads to higher prices and more-limited goods.
According to Crimea’s new state media, politics in Crimea isn’t about material well-being. It’s about life or death. Kozyr, the Crimean government broadcasting head, said it’s her job to remind the locals of that.
During the pro-Western revolution in Ukraine in 2014, which included radical nationalists, Russian media warned of imminent violence against Russian speakers and Crimea’s more than 2 million residents.
“Sometimes a splash of cold water is good, to remind people of what we avoided,” Kozyr said, “if it hadn’t been for the voluntary decision of Vladimir Putin to save 2.5 million lives.”
After Russia seized Crimea, the state spent more than $4 million at current exchange rates to build up the region’s state broadcaster, and the regional government continues to provide multimillion-dollar annual subsidies.
Kozyr, a former morning show host who refers to past Ukrainian rule in Crimea as an occupation, said she received media-management training in St. Petersburg and advice from Moscow-based media specialists who flew to Crimea. Russian state TV engineers helped in outfitting the studio despite procurement difficulties because of Western sanctions.
“Russian television and the Russian media industry were far ahead of where Crimea was or where Ukraine is now,” Crimean Information Minister Dmitry Polonsky said in an interview.
In the converted Ukrainian state TV building, storage space that used to hold Soviet-era props now houses a 24-hour Crimean news channel. The new cameras are Japanese, and a coffee table for the morning show includes a built-in heater to keep the hosts’ drinks warm. Two modern Mercedes TV trucks assembled in Moscow have replaced the Ukrainian channel’s rusting Soviet-made van, and a third is on the way. There is now a children’s department, and a family show that emphasizes patriotism and Russian history is in development.
An independent channel catering to the minority Crimean Tatar population has been banished from the peninsula, replaced by a state-funded, pro-Kremlin version called Millet. The independent channel, ATR, now broadcasts from Kiev and has been urging Crimean Tatars still living on the peninsula not to vote in Sunday’s election. Millet, meanwhile, has been airing a political talk show with a visual style very similar to ATR — but with the opposite message.
“While Ukraine kills its own peaceful citizens,” a Millet announcer intoned this week, “the Russian Federation is building innovation cities, innovation centers, spaceports, unique transportation infrastructure, hospitals, schools and kindergartens.”
Ukraine is trying to fight back. Last year it erected a 500-foot television tower at the Crimean border to transmit Ukrainian TV signals into the peninsula and has provided government funding to ATR. ATR head Lenur Islyamov describes his operation as an “informational cannon” shooting at Crimea. But he said the Russian media campaign is succeeding in creating a feeling of permanence around Russian authority in Crimea that seems to make a return to Ukraine impossible.
“The Russia they wanted was different,” Islyamov said of the Crimeans who supported the annexation. “In the end, they got nothing but propaganda.”
With no reliable public-opinion polling on the peninsula, the impact of Russia’s media campaign is hard to quantify. Protests are suppressed by the authorities and kept off the television screen.
“They don’t show what’s really happening in Crimea,” said Sevil Aledinova, who used to work for Ukrainian state television in Crimea and now works in Kiev. “They don’t show how human rights are being squeezed.”
But when Putin came to Crimea on Wednesday for a campaign stop, the power of Russian state media was on display. Kozyr’s broadcaster deployed both of its new trucks and nine cameras to cover Putin’s rally in the port city of Sevastopol, beaming a live feed by satellite to state TV headquarters in Moscow.
In the crowd of thousands, people repeated the tropes that have long been a staple of Russian nationwide state TV and are now amplified by the operation in Crimea.

U.S. nuclear power regulator urged to reject limits on cyber protections
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A science advocacy group urged the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday to reject a longstanding industry request to limit cyber attack protections at nuclear plants, a day after the Trump administration publicly blamed Moscow for hacking into nuclear power and other energy infrastructure.
The Nuclear Energy Institute industry group petitioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2014 to limit the scope of the agency’s cyber-protection safeguards to only systems with a direct impact on safety. The institute said in the petition that such limits would be “less burdensome” for operators of nuclear power plants while being “adequately protective” of public health and safety.
The petition is “foolhardy at best and, at worse, downright dangerous,” said Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit science advisory group.
The Department of Homeland Security and FBI on Thursday said that the Russian government hacking campaign on energy and other facilities stretched back at least two years.
“In light of the growing cyber threat to nuclear plants highlighted by yesterday’s alert, the agency should now simply reject it,” Lyman said.
NRC spokesman David McIntyre said the agency sent the institute a letter in September telling them it was deferring consideration of the petition until it completes a round of inspections related to cyber security. The inspections started late last year and will continue through 2019.
Systems that control the most critical safety equipment at nuclear plants are largely immune to cyber attacks because they are analog-based and not connected to the internet. But many other systems with key safety and security functions are digital-based and could be compromised via their internet connections, Lyman said.
Hackers could disable or reprogram systems including electronic locks, alarms, closed-circuit television cameras, and communications equipment, the group said. Some plants have equipment, such as cranes that move highly radioactive spent fuel, that use network-based systems that could be manipulated to cause an accident, it said.
The United States is the world leader in nuclear power, with 99 operating reactors. But the industry has suffered numerous closures in recent years in the face of a glut of cheap natural gas, a competing fuel for power plants, and soaring safety protection costs as a result of measures put in place after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
NEI spokesman John Keeley said his group had no comment on the request by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Don’t watch this video of a malfunctioning chair lift if you ever plan to ski again
At least eight people were injured after a chair lift at a Georgia ski resort malfunctioned, Georgia Today and Russian media outlets reported.
Videos of the horrifying incident emerged Friday out of Gudauri, a resort on the Greater Caucasus mountain range in Georgia — though they could just as easily have been plucked from every skier’s worst nightmares.
According to the Russian newspaper Pravda Report, the chair lift was somehow shifted into reverse by an operator, which caused it to malfunction.
As videos show, the lift then began hurtling passengers back toward the bottom of the mountain at high speed, to the audible horror of bystanders.
It’s hard to pick out the most alarming aspect of the videos.
Some skiers could be seen jumping off onto the mountain as their chairs sped backward. Others held on until they were at the bottom of the lift — only to be flung into the air by the force of their chair getting whipped back around the line.
At least one skier appeared to be trapped on the ground near the chairs’ lowest point, where a pile of deformed metal chairs would later accumulate as they slammed into one that had fallen off the cable.
Throughout, screaming onlookers can be heard pleading for the lift to be stopped.
Eight people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Pravda Report.

Black man beaten in Charlottesville found not guilty of assaulting white supremacist
A black man brutally beaten at last year’s white supremacist “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville — and who was later charged with assaulting a white nationalist — was acquitted Friday.
DeAndre Harris, 20, a former special education instructional assistant, was found not guilty by Charlottesville General District Court Judge Robert Downer Jr. on a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery against Harold Crews, a North Carolina attorney and state chairman of The League of the South. If Harris had been convicted, he would have faced up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
The acquittal is a relief for Harris, who was viciously beaten inside a parking garage next to the city’s police department on Aug. 12, 2017. He suffered a spinal injury and head lacerations that required 10 stitches.
Two months later, his legal path took an unexpected turn when Crews filed a police report and then persuaded a Charlottesville magistrate to issue an arrest warrant in October on a felony charge of unlawful wounding, which carries a five-year maximum sentence. The news was cheered online by white nationalists.

5 interesting findings about U.S. abortions from a new report on the current science
The National Academy of Sciences on Friday released the first in-depth report [ http://nationalacademies.org/hmd/reports/2018/the-safety-and-quality-of-abortion-care-in-the-united-states.aspx ] in more than 40 years about the state of science on abortion safety and quality in the United States. The work, conducted with support from six private foundations, found that abortions done in a clinic or with drugs appear to be safe in the vast majority of cases.
But the report's authors raise concerns about the geographic differences in access to abortion services.
“In many states, regulations have created barriers to safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable abortion services,” they write. “The regulations often prohibit qualified providers from providing services, misinform women of the risks of the procedures they are considering, overrule women’s and clinician’s medical decision-making, or require medically unnecessary services and delays in care.”
Among the study's interesting takeaways:

Caterpillar Inc. CAT 1.22%? will close a parts factory in Texas and may close an engine plant near Chicago as the machinery giant trims continues to pare back its manufacturing footprint.
The company told workers in Waco, Texas, last month that the Tool Works plant will close by the end of 2018, eliminating 200 jobs. That work will shift to a plant in Wamego, Kan., and to outside suppliers.
Caterpillar also said it would decide by the end of the year whether to close the plant in LaGrange, Ill., where about 600 people make diesel engines for railroad locomotives. The company said about 600 administrative and engineering employees would remain at LaGrange even if the engine manufacturing moves to a plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., or outside suppliers. The company said if it closes the plant, production would be moved by the end of the year.
Caterpillar has been shrinking its roster of factories since 2015, when executives said they would eliminate 10,000 jobs and reduce manufacturing capacity by 10% by 2018.

In America, White Women Can Get Away With Almost Anything

Former University of Hartford student Brianna Brochu used bodily fluids, including spit and menstrual blood, to contaminate the belongings of her roommate, Chennel “Jazzy” Rowe. Brochu admitted to licking Rowe’s utensils and smearing blood from a tampon onto Rowe’s backpack, but told police she hadn’t done other things she bragged about in now-deleted Instagram posts: adding “moldy clam dip” to her roommate’s lotion and putting Rowe’s toothbrush in “places where the sun doesn’t shine.”
That Brochu’s punishment came more in the form of losing a scholarship than in the form of legal censure suggests Rowe’s victimization was deemed acceptable.
The court gave Brochu “accelerated rehabilitation” and special probation on Monday, basically declaring that the malice with which she acted should not be treated as a reflection on her character. The legal system essentially asserted that her reveling in getting rid of her roommate, whom she called “Jamaican Barbie,” was not inspired by hate.
For those who understand the need to declare not only #BlackLivesMatter but also #SayHerName, this outcome was not surprising. Especially when compared to their white peers, black girls and women receive much harsher treatment for minor mischief. Indeed, black girls and women don’t even have to victimize other people to feel the full force of the law and the public’s disapproval.
Because both the perpetrator and victim are women, this case offers an opportunity to consider how gender inflects the racism that greases the wheels of the U.S. (in)justice system. It places a spotlight on how wedded Americans remain to the idea that white women and girls simply do not perpetrate violence. This idea is so seductive that, even when a white woman’s violence cannot be denied, it is apparently part of our American duty to ensure she gets another chance to go back to her presumably natural state of innocence and virtue.
As the Me Too and Time’s Up movements highlight how white women’s victimization hasn’t been taken seriously, it may be tempting to downplay white women’s aggression. That would be a mistake. After all, before it sparked coalition-building across race and class, Me Too demonstrated that white women can assume their own efforts to be unprecedented when they don’t consider women of color. It’s dangerous to critique sexism by flattening out the category “woman” in ways that ignore racism. Doing so can easily erase the work of women of color, as well as their varied experiences with violence.
Black women know better than most: White women sometimes revel in doing great harm.
The dynamic at work in the Brochu case is not at all unusual or exclusive to women, though, so understanding the gender dynamics shouldn’t obscure the broader context. When people of color are wronged by white people, the common response is to find fault with the person of color. When everyone is so busy blaming the victim — black and brown people are just too sensitive, always reading bad intentions into harmless words and deeds — who has time to consider how the perpetrator could improve?
Professor David Leonard has consistently identified Americans’ insistence on manufacturing innocence for white people. The legal system approaches white people with a commitment to “continually aid and abet with innocence,” he wrote in 2013. Mass murderers provide the best example, according to Leonard: The people shooting up schools, churches and movie theaters are overwhelmingly white and male, and the courts, media and American public find ways to humanize them as “troubled” individuals and sympathize with them.
The Brochu case involves two young women, and the same dynamic is at play. There was evidence that Brochu’s actions were premeditated and continued over time out of sheer malice and racial hatred, but the court manufactured innocence for her. Understanding the ease with which this happened, and why Brochu’s defense could confidently press for more and more leniency, requires facing a basic truth about Americans’ resistance to acknowledging hate crimes.
My research on the similarities between lynchings 100 years ago and anti-LGBTQ violence today has taught me that violence based on a person’s identity has everything to do with the deeply held belief that the only real citizens are straight white men. Everyone else is a “guest” who should be grateful if they are tolerated and left unmolested. Facing this reality requires acknowledging a simple fact that all Americans are taught to avoid noticing: It matters that the nation’s laws overwhelmingly originated with straight white men. We lie when we act as if that fact is neutral.
White men have a gender and a race that shapes their experiences and worldview just as much as gender and race inform my experiences and perspective as a black woman. American laws have been written to reflect the biases and values of white men. Indeed, they have mostly emerged from white men’s feelings, especially their fear of losing an iota of power. This is true no matter how much everyone is encouraged to pretend that American jurisprudence is detached and based on reason, not emotion.
It is because a small number of people who are not straight white men ? and who overcame tremendous obstacles to become attorneys and judges, spilling untold amounts of blood and ink to do so ? that some American statutes actually aim to project marginalized groups.
Overall, American jurisprudence has evolved to ensure that “real” citizens (white men) keep their license to do harm because others must sometimes be reminded that they are not truly citizens. Depending on how close someone comes to being a while male ? the demographic that is unquestionably the “real” citizen ? the law will extend similar license, as long as their victim is even more of a “guest.”
In the Brochu case, a lesser citizen, a white woman, did harm to a black woman. No problem. Let’s manufacture some innocence!
This tendency does not simply affect the victims of white criminals; it shapes American culture. Manufacturing innocence for the most despicable white perpetrators inevitably means also manufacturing merit for white people whose only virtue is that they aren’t aggressively terrible.
In other words: As court decisions align with broader values and undeniable patterns in media coverage and public opinion, it is clear that white people hold themselves and each other to incredibly low standards.
If systematically poisoning your roommate with bodily fluids doesn’t bring consequences, white men and women who would not do something so disgusting can think of themselves as damn near angelic — even as they do nothing to make this country less hostile for anyone but themselves. This is surely why the U.S. is full of cities where some high schools look like college campuses while high schools down the street look and feel like prisons. Brianna Brochu has held up a mirror not only to the American criminal justice system but also to society at large. When will all the good and decent white people hold themselves and each other to higher standards?

Actually, CNN did not attempt to impose some “scripted” questions on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab. Such was the message on Tuesday night issued from Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity in corrections to the bogus media story of last week. “For the sake of honesty and full disclosure, to which we are committed, we have to tell you there is no evidence as of right now that CNN tried to give Colton Haab a scripted question. And we want you to know that,” said Carlson on his eponymous show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” That admission followed an extensive summary of the events as Carlson had reported them.
For his part, Hannity stuck with a smaller disclosure:
"We have a quick update on a story we told you about last week. Colton Haab is a Stoneman Douglas High School student. He was supposed to appear on CNN’s gun-control town hall. He said the network tried to script his question. Both he and his father said they had emails to prove that, told the entire media. Tonight Glenn Haab told the AP that he omitted some words from the email; he says he didn’t do it on purpose. Therefore, what Haabs told all news outlets last week was inaccurate. Our job is always to strive for the truth, and we want to correct the record."
Both corrections were prompted by an Associated Press story reporting that Glenn Haab, father of Colton Haab, had admitted to altering an email that was part of a back-and-forth between the Haab family and a CNN producer. The alteration left some ambiguity as to whether CNN may have imposed a question on the 17-year-old Colton Haab. CNN on Friday released its own email records of the correspondence after two news outlets — Fox News and HuffPost — had forwarded allegedly doctored correspondence as part of an effort to authenticate the records.

James Mattis is linked to a massive corporate fraud and nobody wants to talk about it
Better let a scandal slide than risk a nuclear war.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis is implicated in one of the largest business scandals of the past decades, described by the Securities and Exchange Commission as an “elaborate, years-long fraud” through which Theranos, led by CEO Elizabeth Holmes and president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, “exaggerated or made false statements about the company’s technology, business, and financial performance.”
Basically, their biotech startup was founded on the promise of faster, cheaper, painless blood tests. But their technology was fake.
Mattis not only served on Theranos’s board during some of the years it was perpetrating the fraud after he retired from US military service, but he earlier served as a key advocate of putting the company’s technology (technology that was, to be clear, fake) to use inside the military while he was still serving as a general. Holmes is settling the case, paying a $500,000 fee and accepting various other penalties, while Balwani is fighting it out in court.
Nobody on the board is being directly charged with doing anything. But accepting six-figure checks to serve as a frontman for a con operation is the kind of thing that would normally count as a liability in American politics.
But nobody wants to talk about it. Not just Trump and his co-partisans in Congress; the Democratic Party opposition is also inclined to give Mattis a pass. Everyone in Washington is more or less convinced that his presence in the Pentagon is the only thing standing between us and possible nuclear Armageddon.
It’s an absurd, intolerable situation, but that’s life in America in 2018 — and a perfect illustration of how Trump’s unfitness for office exerts a corrosive influence throughout American life.

A California Bank Closed Manafort-Linked Accounts In 2016 After Transactions Raised Suspicions
Months later, companies behind his real estate development efforts with his then son-in-law declared bankruptcy.
In March 2016, weeks before Paul Manafort joined the Trump campaign, a company co-owned by Manafort and his son-in-law at the time, Jeffrey Yohai, opened a bank account in conjunction with real estate development efforts the pair were undertaking in Los Angeles. Two months later, the company opened a second account at the same bank.
In mid-September, however, the bank forcibly closed the accounts due to a series of transactions the bank deemed to be suspicious, and a few days before the 2016 election filed a suspicious activity report, or SAR, with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). By law, banks must file suspicious activity reports when they spot transactions that bear hallmarks of money laundering or other financial misconduct. Such reports can support investigations and intelligence gathering — but by themselves they are not evidence of a crime.
From there, things quickly went downhill.
By the end of 2016, a related company controlled by Manafort and Yohai had filed for bankruptcy, as had the companies set up to handle three of the properties involved in the pair’s efforts. Jessica Manafort filed for divorce against Yohai in March 2017, which has since been finalized. By late September 2017, Yohai informed the court overseeing the bankruptcies that the ownership of new companies set up to handle the purchases of the properties while in bankruptcy was “misrepresented” to him and that Paul Manafort and others associated with those companies conspired to “mislead” the court and others involved “as to their true intentions and motivations.”
Both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters have reported in recent months that the federal prosecutor in Los Angeles has taken interest in Yohai and Manafort’s efforts, with Reuters suggesting the California investigation could provide additional leverage to special counsel Robert Mueller in his attempts to get Manafort to cooperate with his investigation. CNN had previously reported that Yohai had spoken to prosecutors.
What has not been reported, however, is information about the suspicious activity report. Mueller and his team have had access to the SAR about Yohai and Manafort’s accounts — on which Rick Gates, who has agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation, is an additional authorized signer — since this past September, BuzzFeed News has learned. And, after Mueller indicted Manafort and Gates this past October, the bank reviewed the account activity and filed an amended report, providing FinCEN with still more information.
The Banc of California accounts, a fuller picture revealed, had funds totaling $2.6 million. Baylor Holding LLC — the company in whose name the accounts were opened — had listed properties valued between $16 million and $24 million and secured a $1 million line of credit in mid-2016 to be used for renovation and construction in preparing the properties for sale, according to the SAR reviewed by BuzzFeed News.
Presented with the information contained in BuzzFeed News’ report, James Andrew Hinds Jr., a lawyer for Yohai, responded, “Mr. Yohai has nothing to add to your investigation into the matters outlined below.” A spokesperson for Manafort did not provide any comment.
All of this happened surrounding the months in which Manafort was the chairman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, with the first account being opened weeks before Manafort joined the campaign. The SAR was filed less than a week before Election Day.
While Manafort's relationship with Yohai has figured in speculation in recent months about whether Mueller is interested in their business dealings, their work together has yet to appear in any of Mueller's public filings.
But the interest has been explicit in Congress. As part of their investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, Sens. Lindsey Graham and Sheldon Whitehouse, the chair and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, sent a letter in 2017 to FinCEN requesting access to any suspicious activity reports submitted by banks on Manafort, Yohai, and their real estate holding companies, along with additional names and businesses.
FinCEN searched its database and pulled dozens of suspicious activity reports on Manafort and his businesses as well as several on Yohai and his businesses. The existence of those reports has not been previously reported and provides new insight into the range of information available to investigators interested in Manafort and Yohai’s business dealings.
On March 10, 2016, Baylor Holding LLC — of which Manafort and Yohai are 50-50 co-owners — opened a checking account with the Banc of California, according to the SAR, which BuzzFeed News has reviewed. A little more than two weeks later, on March 28, it was announced that Manafort was joining Trump’s campaign. The SAR notes that Baylor opened a second account with the bank on May 10.
The suspicious activity report notes that in May that Baylor’s company had secured a $1 million revolving line of credit to be used for “soft costs” related to the renovation and construction of short sale and foreclosure properties on the Westside of Los Angeles. Their company listed six properties valued at between $16 million and $24 million, according to the SAR.
In the months that followed, Manafort worked — for free — for the Trump campaign, being named the campaign’s chairman in mid-May, attending the infamous Trump Tower meeting in June, and helping to wrangle delegates at the convention. He also communicated and met with a Ukrainian business associate with connections to a Russian oligarch in July and August, and, after the New York Times’ reported on a “secret ledger” detailing payments for Manafort by pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians, resigned from the campaign on Aug. 19.
Less than a month later, the Baylor Holding accounts were forcibly closed by the Banc of California. The reason, per the SAR, was a series of transactions that took place between Aug. 26 and Sept. 6 — tied to a loan in the amount of $402,572 — that the bank identified as account fraud activity. Both accounts were forcibly closed by the bank on Sept. 12.
An amended suspicious activity report filed after Manafort’s initial indictment in October 2017 noted that the account had funds totaling $2.6 million and stated that transactions were flagged due to suspicion about the source of the funds, suspicious wire transfers and electronic fund transfers, suspicious use of noncash monetary instruments, and a transaction with no apparent economic, business, or lawful purpose.
A bank spokesperson declined to comment.
Just over three months later, Yohai would be going to court, filing for bankruptcy for Mt Yohai LLC — a company 70% controlled by Baylor Holding — and for three other companies created to run the sale of three of the properties at issue: 779 Stradella LLC, 1550 Blue Jay Way LLC (a property that involves an investment made by Dustin Hoffman and his son Jacob), and 2401 Nottingham LLC. Yohai is listed on the bankruptcy filings as the managing member of all five entities.
In a January 2017 filing, Mt Yohai LLC claimed only one asset — a parcel of land, 2521 Nottingham Avenue, at the southern end of Los Angeles’s enormous Griffith Park — valued at $6.5 million and more than $2.1 million in liabilities.
The bankruptcy court granted a motion approving the sale of the 2521 Nottingham Avenue property for a fraction of that claimed value — $1.8 million — as part of the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings this January. The purchaser, Thomas Fanning, owned 10% of Mt Yohai’s equity interests, according to bankruptcy filings, and a company Fanning runs, Bowery Design and Development, was owed more than $500,000 by Mt Yohai at the time of the bankruptcy filing — an amount that reduced the cash price of the sale to a little less than $1.3 million. The other Nottingham Avenue property-related bankruptcy case was dismissed in February 2017, and the other two remain pending.
Meanwhile, two of the parties involved in these cases — Manafort and a creditor, Genesis Capital — also have been involved in a real estate transaction in New York that Reuters reported some lawyers say raises questions about the parties’ transparency to the bankruptcy court in California.
And, as to Yohai, a photographer alleges — in yet another legal action — that he provided Yohai with $2.9 million for investments in NYC real estate that has not yet been repaid. This despite a promissory note that the photographer, Guy Aroch, alleges Yohai signed in late September 2016 acknowledging that repayment would be forthcoming that next month.

Fifty years ago, on March 16, 1968, U.S. soldiers attacked the Vietnamese village of My Lai. Even though the soldiers met no resistance, they slaughtered more than 500 Vietnamese women, children and old men over the next four hours, in what became known as the My Lai massacre. After the massacre, the U.S. military attempted to cover up what happened. But in 1969 a young reporter named Seymour Hersh would reveal a 26-year-old soldier named William Calley was being investigated for killing 109 Vietnamese civilians. Today, memorials have been held in My Lai to mark the 50th anniversary of this horrific attack.

President Donald J. Trump Proclaims March 18, 2018, through March 24, 2018, to be National Poison Prevention Week

Poisoning remains the leading cause of injury death in the United States. By taking the proper precautions and preparing for emergency situations, however, we can ensure our families and our communities avoid poisoning tragedies. During National Poison Prevention Week, we strive to reduce the frequency of poisoning deaths and educate ourselves about how to prevent accidental poisoning.
Since 2000, the rate of accidental drug-poisoning deaths has more than quadrupled. Accidental poisoning due to drug overdose has taken immense tolls on families all across the country, and synthetic opioids continue to push the death count higher. In 2016 alone, we lost 116 people per day from opioid-related drug overdoses.
To address this devastating epidemic, I have mobilized my entire Administration to combat drug addiction and opioid abuse. In October 2017, my Administration declared the opioid addiction crisis a national public health emergency. My 2018 Budget proposes $3 billion in new funding this year to combat the opioid epidemic, including through providing additional support for mental health initiatives.
My Administration has also led multiple national “Take Back Day” events, during which Americans have had the opportunity to safely dispose of unneeded prescription medications, preventing them from falling into the wrong hands. During the most recent event last October, the Drug Enforcement Administration collected 456 tons of prescription drugs for disposal at more than 5,300 collection sites. We will continue to champion these initiatives, which help prevent future tragedies from accidental poisonings and drug overdoses.
This week, and every week, we warn all Americans about unintended exposure to poisons, so that we can reduce risks and prevent injuries and lost lives. We all can do our part by ensuring the products we bring into our homes, including medications, cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, small batteries, and other chemicals, are stored out of sight and out of reach of children. Accidental poisonings are preventable, and we must recommit ourselves to taking the necessary actions to protect our families, and improve the health, well-being, and prosperity of our Nation as a whole.
To encourage Americans to learn more about the dangers of unintentional poisonings and to take appropriate preventative measures, on September 26, 1961, the Congress, by joint resolution (75 Stat. 681), authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation designating the third week of March each year as “National Poison Prevention Week.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 18, 2018, through March 24, 2018, to be National Poison Prevention Week. I call upon all Americans to observe this week by taking actions to safeguard their families from poisonous products, chemicals, and medicines, and drugs found in our homes, and to raise awareness of these dangers in order to prevent accidental injuries and deaths.

Across our great Nation, vocational-technical schools prepare Americans for careers in critical sectors of our economy, including manufacturing, construction, and technology fields. These industries are essential to our Nation’s prosperity and security, as well as to our success in the competitive global marketplace. During Vocational-Technical Education Week, we highlight the important role that vocational and technical education plays in lifting up our communities and putting millions of Americans on the road to success.
As I said in the State of the Union Address, my Administration is focused on investing in workforce development, especially as the recent tax cuts spur major job creation across the country. Today, 5.9 million American jobs are unfilled, and more than 350,000 of them are in manufacturing. Our Nation needs skilled workers to fill these roles, but the cost of postsecondary education continues to rise while many colleges and universities fail to adequately equip students with skills that align with the jobs in demand. Businesses large and small routinely observe that they cannot find qualified applicants to fill their vacancies. Vocational-technical schools help students explore their passions and enter the workforce with the necessary competencies to secure well-paying, family-sustaining jobs.
My Administration recognizes the importance of increasing access to education, which is why my infrastructure proposal includes important reforms that will make it easier for Americans to access affordable, relevant, and high-quality education that leads to full-time work and long-term careers. It also includes initiatives related to workforce development. Specifically, my proposal would allow students to use Pell Grant funding to pay for cutting-edge, short-term programs that lead to quick and efficient transitions into the workforce. My proposal also calls on the Congress to reauthorize the Perkins Career and Technical Education program and to improve it by making it easier for schools to partner with local businesses to expand apprenticeships, other forms of skills-based learning, and dual-enrollment programs. Further, I have called for reforming the Federal Work-Study program so that more Federal dollars go toward helping students — especially lower-income students — have more meaningful workplace experiences. Through a combination of administrative and legislative actions, my Administration is seeking to train the workforce of today for both the challenges and developments of tomorrow.
Vocational-Technical Education Week reminds us to consider how we can help all Americans achieve the American Dream, by providing opportunities for all of our citizens to secure employment, success, and fulfillment. American strength and prosperity truly rely upon the educational advancement opportunities we make available to our Nation’s youth.
NOW, THERFORE, I, DONALD J. Saltz, the senior art critic at New York Magazine for the past 11 years, has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism three times. He also tried his hand as a reality TV judge for Bravo's series, "Work of Art", a competition show for budding artists. He's even married to the senior art critic at The New York Times.
But Saltz had never seen art created, generated or assisted by artificial intelligence. So we showed him some, and he had a lot to say.

AI Poker Bots Are Beating The World's Best Players (HBO)

What’s it like to play poker against an AI bot? Really weird and really difficult, it turns out.
That was the vibe when we checked in on the 20-day “Brains vs. AI: Re-Match” in Pittsburgh, which pits four professional poker players against a Carnegie Mellon University-designed bot named Libratus.
Computer scientists at the university had tried this stunt with a bot named Claudico in 2015, but the humans picked up on its weird machine weaknesses and beat it soundly. So the scientists went back to the lab and rewrote its algorithm in a few key areas to make it unbeatable.
Their work paid off.
On Jan. 30, Libratus made history by trouncing the humans in a marathon 120,000 hands, coming out on top by $1,766,250 in chips — and pretty much killing it every day before that. The humans ended their inglorious run by splitting shares of a $200,000 prize.
The bot’s win has numerous implications for any field where decision-making is based on incomplete, or hidden, information. Or straight-up misinformation. Fields where people are forced to think like poker players, basically. Business negotiation, military strategy, cybersecurity, and medical treatment are all areas the bot’s designers say could benefit from the algorithms that govern its automated decision-making.
Get ready, humanity — the bots have entered the building.

The very existence of the concept of Black History Month suggests that, for twenty eight days in February, we should think about Black History, so that we can comfortably forget about it for the next eleven months of the year. But that’s a dangerous and sometimes fatal mistake, because forgetting or ignoring history can cause chaos.
When George Orwell wrote 1984 he made two statements that I think are critical for us to understand where we are today: “who controls the past controls the future,” and “who controls the present controls past.” That’s what is at stake when we think about forgetting our history. What is at stake is our future.
America either has a headache with our racial history, or we’ve got cancer. And the truth about our past reveals that there is a cancer that we have to deal with. If we continue to take aspirin to cure what we would like to believe is a headache, we will not get out of where we are.
Without deviation from the norm we will not progress. All of us need to be bold in our thinking about what it means to have true racial justice in America. Black History Month needs to be replaced with a focus on black history every month – because after all, it is a part of American history.

President Donald Trump had people scratching their heads when he referred — with obvious annoyance — to an unpassable “bowling ball test” that Japan uses to justify excluding American cars from the market.
Trump insisted to donors in Missouri on Wednesday that a U.S. automaker had spent a “fortune” building a super car to beat Japanese regulatory tests — but was pounded in the “bowling ball test,” according to an audiotape of his talk [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2018/03/15/transcript-of-trumps-remarks-at-fundraiser-in-missouri-on-march-14/ ] obtained by NBC News and The Washington Post.
“It’s horrible the way they treat us. It’s horrible,” the angry president griped.
The test, he said, involves dropping a bowling ball “from 20 feet up in the air” onto the hood of a car. “If the hood dents, then the car doesn’t qualify,” he said. “Well, guess what, the roof dented a little bit, and they said, nope, this car doesn’t qualify.”
There is no such regulatory test. The best guess on what Trump was talking about?
The Post speculated it was likely linked to a goofy Nissan ad showing bowling balls bouncing wildly down a street. The balls smash several parked cars. Only a Nissan cruises by unscathed ... “urban proof.”
When a smiling reporter who covered the Japanese auto industry for 25 years told White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that no one has any idea what the president was talking about, she said Trump clearly was “joking.”
“Obviously, he’s joking about this particular test,” Sanders said. Trump’s reference “illustrates the creative ways” countries keep American goods out of their markets, she said.
The donor talk in Missouri was the same place where Trump boasted that he dressed down Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for having a trade surplus with the U.S. (The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative actually reports a trade deficit with America).
“I didn’t even know,” Trump told his audience. “I had no idea.”

SIMFEROPOL, Crimea — On the eve of Russia’s presidential election, government television here has been airing segments showing Crimeans what they would face if not for Russian President Vladimir Putin: rocket fire, grieving women and same-sex weddings.
On a political show, the host warns that the West will use any sign of Russian weakness due to low turnout to carry out plans to exterminate the Russian people.
“Our role is a military one,” says Yekaterina Kozyr, the head of this annexed territory’s fast-expanding government broadcaster. “There is a war going on.”
In 2014, as Putin’s capture of this Black Sea peninsula unfolded, Russian troops wearing uniforms without identifying markings seized the dilapidated Crimean headquarters of the Ukrainian state television broadcaster. Even though Putin is assured of a blowout victory, analysts say, the Kremlin is seeking turnout as a stamp of legitimacy for his fourth six-year presidential term. In Crimea, a place central to Putin’s domestic image as a fearless protector of Russian interests, officials see turnout as especially symbolic. They are determined to see it exceed the turnout in Crimea’s internationally unrecognized referendum to join Russia in 2014, which pro-Russian authorities put at more than 80 percent.
“Crimeans understand that we must contribute no fewer people in the election than we did in the referendum in 2014,” said Grigory Ioffe, chairman of the territory’s Civic Chamber. “Public opinion in the West will be counting this.”
For Crimea’s state media, that means war — war against Western “spies” who they claim would like to use an underwhelming Putin election victory to foment unrest. Kozyr describes her staff, who were trained by state media specialists from Moscow, as “informational special forces.” Dmitry Taran, host of a show called “Information Warfare,” says he is both “an information specialist and a military man.”
“It’s necessary to create maximum turnout,” Taran said in an interview. “Vote for whoever you want but turn out — in order to shut up all the international intelligence services that are sitting and waiting for the 19th,” he said, referring to the day after the election.
The message on Crimean television is, if anything, darker and more conspiratorial than the regular fare on Russia’s national TV. That may be because daily life in Crimea is harder than in mainland Russia. International sanctions mean that even Russian companies are wary of doing business here, and the lack of a road connection to the rest of Russia leads to higher prices and more-limited goods.
According to Crimea’s new state media, politics in Crimea isn’t about material well-being. It’s about life or death. Kozyr, the Crimean government broadcasting head, said it’s her job to remind the locals of that.
During the pro-Western revolution in Ukraine in 2014, which included radical nationalists, Russian media warned of imminent violence against Russian speakers and Crimea’s more than 2 million residents.
“Sometimes a splash of cold water is good, to remind people of what we avoided,” Kozyr said, “if it hadn’t been for the voluntary decision of Vladimir Putin to save 2.5 million lives.”
After Russia seized Crimea, the state spent more than $4 million at current exchange rates to build up the region’s state broadcaster, and the regional government continues to provide multimillion-dollar annual subsidies.
Kozyr, a former morning show host who refers to past Ukrainian rule in Crimea as an occupation, said she received media-management training in St. Petersburg and advice from Moscow-based media specialists who flew to Crimea. Russian state TV engineers helped in outfitting the studio despite procurement difficulties because of Western sanctions.
“Russian television and the Russian media industry were far ahead of where Crimea was or where Ukraine is now,” Crimean Information Minister Dmitry Polonsky said in an interview.
In the converted Ukrainian state TV building, storage space that used to hold Soviet-era props now houses a 24-hour Crimean news channel. The new cameras are Japanese, and a coffee table for the morning show includes a built-in heater to keep the hosts’ drinks warm. Two modern Mercedes TV trucks assembled in Moscow have replaced the Ukrainian channel’s rusting Soviet-made van, and a third is on the way. There is now a children’s department, and a family show that emphasizes patriotism and Russian history is in development.
An independent channel catering to the minority Crimean Tatar population has been banished from the peninsula, replaced by a state-funded, pro-Kremlin version called Millet. The independent channel, ATR, now broadcasts from Kiev and has been urging Crimean Tatars still living on the peninsula not to vote in Sunday’s election. Millet, meanwhile, has been airing a political talk show with a visual style very similar to ATR — but with the opposite message.
“While Ukraine kills its own peaceful citizens,” a Millet announcer intoned this week, “the Russian Federation is building innovation cities, innovation centers, spaceports, unique transportation infrastructure, hospitals, schools and kindergartens.”
Ukraine is trying to fight back. Last year it erected a 500-foot television tower at the Crimean border to transmit Ukrainian TV signals into the peninsula and has provided government funding to ATR. ATR head Lenur Islyamov describes his operation as an “informational cannon” shooting at Crimea. But he said the Russian media campaign is succeeding in creating a feeling of permanence around Russian authority in Crimea that seems to make a return to Ukraine impossible.
“The Russia they wanted was different,” Islyamov said of the Crimeans who supported the annexation. “In the end, they got nothing but propaganda.”
With no reliable public-opinion polling on the peninsula, the impact of Russia’s media campaign is hard to quantify. Protests are suppressed by the authorities and kept off the television screen.
“They don’t show what’s really happening in Crimea,” said Sevil Aledinova, who used to work for Ukrainian state television in Crimea and now works in Kiev. “They don’t show how human rights are being squeezed.”
But when Putin came to Crimea on Wednesday for a campaign stop, the power of Russian state media was on display. Kozyr’s broadcaster deployed both of its new trucks and nine cameras to cover Putin’s rally in the port city of Sevastopol, beaming a live feed by satellite to state TV headquarters in Moscow.
In the crowd of thousands, people repeated the tropes that have long been a staple of Russian nationwide state TV and are now amplified by the operation in Crimea.
The United States wants to destroy Russia, they said. Anything the West sees as Russian aggression is simply Russia defending itself. Life under Russian rule may not be perfect, they said, but if Putin hadn’t saved Crimea from the Ukrainian nationalists in 2014, unimaginable violence would have followed.
“We weren’t the ones who started this information war,” said Polonsky, the Crimean information minister. “We always tell the truth.”

U.S. nuclear power regulator urged to reject limits on cyber protections
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A science advocacy group urged the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday to reject a longstanding industry request to limit cyber attack protections at nuclear plants, a day after the Trump administration publicly blamed Moscow for hacking into nuclear power and other energy infrastructure.
The Nuclear Energy Institute industry group petitioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2014 to limit the scope of the agency’s cyber-protection safeguards to only systems with a direct impact on safety. The institute said in the petition that such limits would be “less burdensome” for operators of nuclear power plants while being “adequately protective” of public health and safety.
The petition is “foolhardy at best and, at worse, downright dangerous,” said Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit science advisory group.
The Department of Homeland Security and FBI on Thursday said that the Russian government hacking campaign on energy and other facilities stretched back at least two years.
“In light of the growing cyber threat to nuclear plants highlighted by yesterday’s alert, the agency should now simply reject it,” Lyman said.
NRC spokesman David McIntyre said the agency sent the institute a letter in September telling them it was deferring consideration of the petition until it completes a round of inspections related to cyber security. The inspections started late last year and will continue through 2019.
Systems that control the most critical safety equipment at nuclear plants are largely immune to cyber attacks because they are analog-based and not connected to the internet. But many other systems with key safety and security functions are digital-based and could be compromised via their internet connections, Lyman said.
Hackers could disable or reprogram systems including electronic locks, alarms, closed-circuit television cameras, and communications equipment, the group said. Some plants have equipment, such as cranes that move highly radioactive spent fuel, that use network-based systems that could be manipulated to cause an accident, it said.
The United States is the world leader in nuclear power, with 99 operating reactors. But the industry has suffered numerous closures in recent years in the face of a glut of cheap natural gas, a competing fuel for power plants, and soaring safety protection costs as a result of measures put in place after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
NEI spokesman John Keeley said his group had no comment on the request by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

At least eight people were injured after a chair lift at a Georgia ski resort malfunctioned, Georgia Today and Russian media outlets reported.
Videos of the horrifying incident emerged Friday out of Gudauri, a resort on the Greater Caucasus mountain range in Georgia — though they could just as easily have been plucked from every skier’s worst nightmares.
According to the Russian newspaper Pravda Report, the chair lift was somehow shifted into reverse by an operator, which caused it to malfunction.
As videos show, the lift then began hurtling passengers back toward the bottom of the mountain at high speed, to the audible horror of bystanders.
It’s hard to pick out the most alarming aspect of the videos.
Some skiers could be seen jumping off onto the mountain as their chairs sped backward. Others held on until they were at the bottom of the lift — only to be flung into the air by the force of their chair getting whipped back around the line.
At least one skier appeared to be trapped on the ground near the chairs’ lowest point, where a pile of deformed metal chairs would later accumulate as they slammed into one that had fallen off the cable.
Throughout, screaming onlookers can be heard pleading for the lift to be stopped.
Eight people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Pravda Report.
Since a complete description of this reporter’s reaction — exclamation points, profanity and all — can’t be reprinted in The Washington Post, we’ll leave it to Deadspin’s Drew Magary to sum up how terrifying this truly is.

Black man beaten in Charlottesville found not guilty of assaulting white supremacist
A black man brutally beaten at last year’s white supremacist “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville — and who was later charged with assaulting a white nationalist — was acquitted Friday.
DeAndre Harris, 20, a former special education instructional assistant, was found not guilty by Charlottesville General District Court Judge Robert Downer Jr. on a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery against Harold Crews, a North Carolina attorney and state chairman of The League of the South. If Harris had been convicted, he would have faced up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
The acquittal is a relief for Harris, who was viciously beaten inside a parking garage next to the city’s police department on Aug. 12, 2017. He suffered a spinal injury and head lacerations that required 10 stitches.
Two months later, his legal path took an unexpected turn when Crews filed a police report and then persuaded a Charlottesville magistrate to issue an arrest warrant in October on a felony charge of unlawful wounding, which carries a five-year maximum sentence. The news was cheered online by white nationalists.

5 interesting findings about U.S. abortions from a new report on the current science
The National Academy of Sciences on Friday released the first in-depth report [ http://nationalacademies.org/hmd/reports/2018/the-safety-and-quality-of-abortion-care-in-the-united-states.aspx ] in more than 40 years about the state of science on abortion safety and quality in the United States. The work, conducted with support from six private foundations, found that abortions done in a clinic or with drugs appear to be safe in the vast majority of cases.
But the report's authors raise concerns about the geographic differences in access to abortion services.
“In many states, regulations have created barriers to safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable abortion services,” they write. “The regulations often prohibit qualified providers from providing services, misinform women of the risks of the procedures they are considering, overrule women’s and clinician’s medical decision-making, or require medically unnecessary services and delays in care.”
Among the study's interesting takeaways:

Caterpillar Inc. CAT 1.22%? will close a parts factory in Texas and may close an engine plant near Chicago as the machinery giant trims continues to pare back its manufacturing footprint.
The company told workers in Waco, Texas, last month that the Tool Works plant will close by the end of 2018, eliminating 200 jobs. That work will shift to a plant in Wamego, Kan., and to outside suppliers.
Caterpillar also said it would decide by the end of the year whether to close the plant in LaGrange, Ill., where about 600 people make diesel engines for railroad locomotives. The company said about 600 administrative and engineering employees would remain at LaGrange even if the engine manufacturing moves to a plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., or outside suppliers. The company said if it closes the plant, production would be moved by the end of the year.
Caterpillar has been shrinking its roster of factories since 2015, when executives said they would eliminate 10,000 jobs and reduce manufacturing capacity by 10% by 2018.

Former University of Hartford student Brianna Brochu used bodily fluids, including spit and menstrual blood, to contaminate the belongings of her roommate, Chennel “Jazzy” Rowe. Brochu admitted to licking Rowe’s utensils and smearing blood from a tampon onto Rowe’s backpack, but told police she hadn’t done other things she bragged about in now-deleted Instagram posts: adding “moldy clam dip” to her roommate’s lotion and putting Rowe’s toothbrush in “places where the sun doesn’t shine.”
That Brochu’s punishment came more in the form of losing a scholarship than in the form of legal censure suggests Rowe’s victimization was deemed acceptable.
The court gave Brochu “accelerated rehabilitation” and special probation on Monday, basically declaring that the malice with which she acted should not be treated as a reflection on her character. The legal system essentially asserted that her reveling in getting rid of her roommate, whom she called “Jamaican Barbie,” was not inspired by hate.
For those who understand the need to declare not only #BlackLivesMatter but also #SayHerName, this outcome was not surprising. Especially when compared to their white peers, black girls and women receive much harsher treatment for minor mischief. Indeed, black girls and women don’t even have to victimize other people to feel the full force of the law and the public’s disapproval.
Because both the perpetrator and victim are women, this case offers an opportunity to consider how gender inflects the racism that greases the wheels of the U.S. (in)justice system. It places a spotlight on how wedded Americans remain to the idea that white women and girls simply do not perpetrate violence. This idea is so seductive that, even when a white woman’s violence cannot be denied, it is apparently part of our American duty to ensure she gets another chance to go back to her presumably natural state of innocence and virtue.
As the Me Too and Time’s Up movements highlight how white women’s victimization hasn’t been taken seriously, it may be tempting to downplay white women’s aggression. That would be a mistake. After all, before it sparked coalition-building across race and class, Me Too demonstrated that white women can assume their own efforts to be unprecedented when they don’t consider women of color. It’s dangerous to critique sexism by flattening out the category “woman” in ways that ignore racism. Doing so can easily erase the work of women of color, as well as their varied experiences with violence.
Black women know better than most: White women sometimes revel in doing great harm.
The dynamic at work in the Brochu case is not at all unusual or exclusive to women, though, so understanding the gender dynamics shouldn’t obscure the broader context. When people of color are wronged by white people, the common response is to find fault with the person of color. When everyone is so busy blaming the victim — black and brown people are just too sensitive, always reading bad intentions into harmless words and deeds — who has time to consider how the perpetrator could improve?
Professor David Leonard has consistently identified Americans’ insistence on manufacturing innocence for white people. The legal system approaches white people with a commitment to “continually aid and abet with innocence,” he wrote in 2013. Mass murderers provide the best example, according to Leonard: The people shooting up schools, churches and movie theaters are overwhelmingly white and male, and the courts, media and American public find ways to humanize them as “troubled” individuals and sympathize with them.
The Brochu case involves two young women, and the same dynamic is at play. There was evidence that Brochu’s actions were premeditated and continued over time out of sheer malice and racial hatred, but the court manufactured innocence for her. Understanding the ease with which this happened, and why Brochu’s defense could confidently press for more and more leniency, requires facing a basic truth about Americans’ resistance to acknowledging hate crimes.
My research on the similarities between lynchings 100 years ago and anti-LGBTQ violence today has taught me that violence based on a person’s identity has everything to do with the deeply held belief that the only real citizens are straight white men. Everyone else is a “guest” who should be grateful if they are tolerated and left unmolested. Facing this reality requires acknowledging a simple fact that all Americans are taught to avoid noticing: It matters that the nation’s laws overwhelmingly originated with straight white men. We lie when we act as if that fact is neutral.
White men have a gender and a race that shapes their experiences and worldview just as much as gender and race inform my experiences and perspective as a black woman. American laws have been written to reflect the biases and values of white men. Indeed, they have mostly emerged from white men’s feelings, especially their fear of losing an iota of power. This is true no matter how much everyone is encouraged to pretend that American jurisprudence is detached and based on reason, not emotion.
It is because a small number of people who are not straight white men ? and who overcame tremendous obstacles to become attorneys and judges, spilling untold amounts of blood and ink to do so ? that some American statutes actually aim to project marginalized groups.
Overall, American jurisprudence has evolved to ensure that “real” citizens (white men) keep their license to do harm because others must sometimes be reminded that they are not truly citizens. Depending on how close someone comes to being a while male ? the demographic that is unquestionably the “real” citizen ? the law will extend similar license, as long as their victim is even more of a “guest.”
In the Brochu case, a lesser citizen, a white woman, did harm to a black woman. No problem. Let’s manufacture some innocence!
This tendency does not simply affect the victims of white criminals; it shapes American culture. Manufacturing innocence for the most despicable white perpetrators inevitably means also manufacturing merit for white people whose only virtue is that they aren’t aggressively terrible.
In other words: As court decisions align with broader values and undeniable patterns in media coverage and public opinion, it is clear that white people hold themselves and each other to incredibly low standards.
If systematically poisoning your roommate with bodily fluids doesn’t bring consequences, white men and women who would not do something so disgusting can think of themselves as damn near angelic — even as they do nothing to make this country less hostile for anyone but themselves. This is surely why the U.S. is full of cities where some high schools look like college campuses while high schools down the street look and feel like prisons. Brianna Brochu has held up a mirror not only to the American criminal justice system but also to society at large. When will all the good and decent white people hold themselves and each other to higher standards?

Actually, CNN did not attempt to impose some “scripted” questions on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab. Such was the message on Tuesday night issued from Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity in corrections to the bogus media story of last week. “For the sake of honesty and full disclosure, to which we are committed, we have to tell you there is no evidence as of right now that CNN tried to give Colton Haab a scripted question. And we want you to know that,” said Carlson on his eponymous show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” That admission followed an extensive summary of the events as Carlson had reported them.
For his part, Hannity stuck with a smaller disclosure:
"We have a quick update on a story we told you about last week. Colton Haab is a Stoneman Douglas High School student. He was supposed to appear on CNN’s gun-control town hall. He said the network tried to script his question. Both he and his father said they had emails to prove that, told the entire media. Tonight Glenn Haab told the AP that he omitted some words from the email; he says he didn’t do it on purpose. Therefore, what Haabs told all news outlets last week was inaccurate. Our job is always to strive for the truth, and we want to correct the record."
Both corrections were prompted by an Associated Press story reporting that Glenn Haab, father of Colton Haab, had admitted to altering an email that was part of a back-and-forth between the Haab family and a CNN producer. The alteration left some ambiguity as to whether CNN may have imposed a question on the 17-year-old Colton Haab. CNN on Friday released its own email records of the correspondence after two news outlets — Fox News and HuffPost — had forwarded allegedly doctored correspondence as part of an effort to authenticate the records.

James Mattis is linked to a massive corporate fraud and nobody wants to talk about it
Better let a scandal slide than risk a nuclear war.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis is implicated in one of the largest business scandals of the past decades, described by the Securities and Exchange Commission as an “elaborate, years-long fraud” through which Theranos, led by CEO Elizabeth Holmes and president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, “exaggerated or made false statements about the company’s technology, business, and financial performance.”
Basically, their biotech startup was founded on the promise of faster, cheaper, painless blood tests. But their technology was fake.
Mattis not only served on Theranos’s board during some of the years it was perpetrating the fraud after he retired from US military service, but he earlier served as a key advocate of putting the company’s technology (technology that was, to be clear, fake) to use inside the military while he was still serving as a general. Holmes is settling the case, paying a $500,000 fee and accepting various other penalties, while Balwani is fighting it out in court.
Nobody on the board is being directly charged with doing anything. But accepting six-figure checks to serve as a frontman for a con operation is the kind of thing that would normally count as a liability in American politics.
But nobody wants to talk about it. Not just Trump and his co-partisans in Congress; the Democratic Party opposition is also inclined to give Mattis a pass. Everyone in Washington is more or less convinced that his presence in the Pentagon is the only thing standing between us and possible nuclear Armageddon.
It’s an absurd, intolerable situation, but that’s life in America in 2018 — and a perfect illustration of how Trump’s unfitness for office exerts a corrosive influence throughout American life.

A California Bank Closed Manafort-Linked Accounts In 2016 After Transactions Raised Suspicions
Months later, companies behind his real estate development efforts with his then son-in-law declared bankruptcy.
In March 2016, weeks before Paul Manafort joined the Trump campaign, a company co-owned by Manafort and his son-in-law at the time, Jeffrey Yohai, opened a bank account in conjunction with real estate development efforts the pair were undertaking in Los Angeles. Two months later, the company opened a second account at the same bank.
In mid-September, however, the bank forcibly closed the accounts due to a series of transactions the bank deemed to be suspicious, and a few days before the 2016 election filed a suspicious activity report, or SAR, with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). By law, banks must file suspicious activity reports when they spot transactions that bear hallmarks of money laundering or other financial misconduct. Such reports can support investigations and intelligence gathering — but by themselves they are not evidence of a crime.
From there, things quickly went downhill.
By the end of 2016, a related company controlled by Manafort and Yohai had filed for bankruptcy, as had the companies set up to handle three of the properties involved in the pair’s efforts. Jessica Manafort filed for divorce against Yohai in March 2017, which has since been finalized. By late September 2017, Yohai informed the court overseeing the bankruptcies that the ownership of new companies set up to handle the purchases of the properties while in bankruptcy was “misrepresented” to him and that Paul Manafort and others associated with those companies conspired to “mislead” the court and others involved “as to their true intentions and motivations.”
Both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters have reported in recent months that the federal prosecutor in Los Angeles has taken interest in Yohai and Manafort’s efforts, with Reuters suggesting the California investigation could provide additional leverage to special counsel Robert Mueller in his attempts to get Manafort to cooperate with his investigation. CNN had previously reported that Yohai had spoken to prosecutors.
What has not been reported, however, is information about the suspicious activity report. Mueller and his team have had access to the SAR about Yohai and Manafort’s accounts — on which Rick Gates, who has agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation, is an additional authorized signer — since this past September, BuzzFeed News has learned. And, after Mueller indicted Manafort and Gates this past October, the bank reviewed the account activity and filed an amended report, providing FinCEN with still more information.
The Banc of California accounts, a fuller picture revealed, had funds totaling $2.6 million. Baylor Holding LLC — the company in whose name the accounts were opened — had listed properties valued between $16 million and $24 million and secured a $1 million line of credit in mid-2016 to be used for renovation and construction in preparing the properties for sale, according to the SAR reviewed by BuzzFeed News.
Presented with the information contained in BuzzFeed News’ report, James Andrew Hinds Jr., a lawyer for Yohai, responded, “Mr. Yohai has nothing to add to your investigation into the matters outlined below.” A spokesperson for Manafort did not provide any comment.
All of this happened surrounding the months in which Manafort was the chairman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, with the first account being opened weeks before Manafort joined the campaign. The SAR was filed less than a week before Election Day.
While Manafort's relationship with Yohai has figured in speculation in recent months about whether Mueller is interested in their business dealings, their work together has yet to appear in any of Mueller's public filings.
But the interest has been explicit in Congress. As part of their investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, Sens. Lindsey Graham and Sheldon Whitehouse, the chair and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, sent a letter in 2017 to FinCEN requesting access to any suspicious activity reports submitted by banks on Manafort, Yohai, and their real estate holding companies, along with additional names and businesses.
FinCEN searched its database and pulled dozens of suspicious activity reports on Manafort and his businesses as well as several on Yohai and his businesses. The existence of those reports has not been previously reported and provides new insight into the range of information available to investigators interested in Manafort and Yohai’s business dealings.
On March 10, 2016, Baylor Holding LLC — of which Manafort and Yohai are 50-50 co-owners — opened a checking account with the Banc of California, according to the SAR, which BuzzFeed News has reviewed. A little more than two weeks later, on March 28, it was announced that Manafort was joining Trump’s campaign. The SAR notes that Baylor opened a second account with the bank on May 10.
The suspicious activity report notes that in May that Baylor’s company had secured a $1 million revolving line of credit to be used for “soft costs” related to the renovation and construction of short sale and foreclosure properties on the Westside of Los Angeles. Their company listed six properties valued at between $16 million and $24 million, according to the SAR.
In the months that followed, Manafort worked — for free — for the Trump campaign, being named the campaign’s chairman in mid-May, attending the infamous Trump Tower meeting in June, and helping to wrangle delegates at the convention. He also communicated and met with a Ukrainian business associate with connections to a Russian oligarch in July and August, and, after the New York Times’ reported on a “secret ledger” detailing payments for Manafort by pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians, resigned from the campaign on Aug. 19.
Less than a month later, the Baylor Holding accounts were forcibly closed by the Banc of California. The reason, per the SAR, was a series of transactions that took place between Aug. 26 and Sept. 6 — tied to a loan in the amount of $402,572 — that the bank identified as account fraud activity. Both accounts were forcibly closed by the bank on Sept. 12.
An amended suspicious activity report filed after Manafort’s initial indictment in October 2017 noted that the account had funds totaling $2.6 million and stated that transactions were flagged due to suspicion about the source of the funds, suspicious wire transfers and electronic fund transfers, suspicious use of noncash monetary instruments, and a transaction with no apparent economic, business, or lawful purpose.
A bank spokesperson declined to comment.
Just over three months later, Yohai would be going to court, filing for bankruptcy for Mt Yohai LLC — a company 70% controlled by Baylor Holding — and for three other companies created to run the sale of three of the properties at issue: 779 Stradella LLC, 1550 Blue Jay Way LLC (a property that involves an investment made by Dustin Hoffman and his son Jacob), and 2401 Nottingham LLC. Yohai is listed on the bankruptcy filings as the managing member of all five entities.
In a January 2017 filing, Mt Yohai LLC claimed only one asset — a parcel of land, 2521 Nottingham Avenue, at the southern end of Los Angeles’s enormous Griffith Park — valued at $6.5 million and more than $2.1 million in liabilities.
The bankruptcy court granted a motion approving the sale of the 2521 Nottingham Avenue property for a fraction of that claimed value — $1.8 million — as part of the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings this January. The purchaser, Thomas Fanning, owned 10% of Mt Yohai’s equity interests, according to bankruptcy filings, and a company Fanning runs, Bowery Design and Development, was owed more than $500,000 by Mt Yohai at the time of the bankruptcy filing — an amount that reduced the cash price of the sale to a little less than $1.3 million. The other Nottingham Avenue property-related bankruptcy case was dismissed in February 2017, and the other two remain pending.
Meanwhile, two of the parties involved in these cases — Manafort and a creditor, Genesis Capital — also have been involved in a real estate transaction in New York that Reuters reported some lawyers say raises questions about the parties’ transparency to the bankruptcy court in California.
And, as to Yohai, a photographer alleges — in yet another legal action — that he provided Yohai with $2.9 million for investments in NYC real estate that has not yet been repaid. This despite a promissory note that the photographer, Guy Aroch, alleges Yohai signed in late September 2016 acknowledging that repayment would be forthcoming that next month.

Right after the election, Erik Hagerman decided he’d take a break from reading about the hoopla of politics.
Donald Trump’s victory shook him. Badly. And so Mr. Hagerman developed his own eccentric experiment, one that was part silent protest, part coping mechanism, part extreme self-care plan.
He swore that he would avoid learning about anything that happened to America after Nov. 8, 2016.
