Boeing continues to have problems with its KC-46 air tanker. The program is missing deadlines and major problems that can endanger receiving aircraft have not been solved. Per the contract Boeing must eat all the costs above the fixed contract.

Airbus entered an airplane in the competition that appeared to be superior but "Buy American" ultimately won out. The Air Force will continue to use its older tankers, retiring the KC-10 and keeping the KC-135, presumably as a back up.
