It is amazing what simple precautions can do to for the average home computer user so they are not targets of hackers.
For example, put a router between your modem and computer and the internet. This will give you a firewall, either static or dynamic. Secondly, get some free anti-spyware, free antivirus program, and a free software firewall.
Your computer will be virtually invisible to the internet and run virus, trojan, malware and spyware free.
Amazing to me how so many people can be so happily ignorant of the simple basics like this to avoid these scenarios.
The pcadvice board at Atomic Bob's lists the links for all these free programs for people to use. If you don;t have them, may I reccommend you visit there and get some for your own protection?
