I see how that can be confusing. I try to stick to whether the "bid" or "ask" saw more action for a day. If buying at the ask is greater than buying at the bid it will put upward pressure on the spread and move the price up. If buys at the bid are greater than buys at the ask then it will put downward pressure on the spread and move the price down.
